The Verdict

The Strand Grill is the main fine-dining room of The Strand Hotel, the Victorian-era grande dame of Yangon opened in 1901 by the Armenian Sarkies brothers (the same family that built the Raffles in Singapore and the Eastern & Oriental in Penang). The hotel is a legitimately historic building — Somerset Maugham, Rudyard Kipling, Noël Coward, and Orson Welles all stayed and dined here — and the grill room has operated as the hotel's principal restaurant, in various forms, for most of the 124 years since.

The current menu is classical European grill. The meat programme leans on imported Australian wagyu, New Zealand grass-fed lamb, and line-caught fish from the Andaman Sea. Signature dishes include an aged rib-eye carved tableside from a trolley, a whole Dover sole meunière, and a slow-braised oxtail preparation that has been on the menu for more than a decade. A smaller Burmese section — in the 2020s renovation the kitchen began featuring elevated interpretations of classical dishes like tea-leaf salad and fish molee — adds a distinctive local thread.

The dining room is the thing. High pressed-tin ceilings, teak floors polished to mirror finish, rattan ceiling fans, white-linen tables, a live pianist most evenings — the room reads as one of the few genuinely preserved colonial dining experiences left in Southeast Asia. The adjacent Strand Bar, for aperitifs before dinner or a cognac after, remains among the most atmospheric bars on the continent.

The Strand Grill is, with Le Planteur, the Yangon restaurant most recommended to visitors. Reservations are straightforward; weekend evenings require a few days notice. The hotel concierge can arrange a pre-dinner tour of the historic rooms for guests who request it.
