Le Planteur

A 1902 colonial mansion on the shore of Inya Lake. French cuisine, wine cellar dinners, garden high tea — and, since 1998, the smartest address in Yangon.

The Verdict

Le Planteur is the French fine-dining restaurant that has operated continuously since 1998 out of a 1902 colonial-era mansion on the shore of Inya Lake, Yangon's leafiest residential quarter. The building is the restaurant's defining feature — a two-storey teak-and-stucco house originally built for a British rubber planter, restored gradually across the restaurant's twenty-seven years of operation, now containing one of Southeast Asia's most quietly beautiful dining rooms.

The kitchen is run by a Swiss-trained brigade and the menu is a classical French fine-dining progression. The signature dishes draw from the canon: foie gras torchon with sautéed apple, roasted lobster with saffron cream, a slow-cooked duck breast with Madagascar pepper, a fillet of wagyu aged in the cellar's dry-ageing chamber. The cheese trolley — genuinely rolled to the table — carries selections flown regularly from France, and the dessert menu maintains the full classical French progression (tarte Tatin, soufflé, île flottante, a savarin soaked in aged Burmese rum).

The restaurant operates four distinct spaces. The principal dining room on the ground floor holds the formal evening service. A second floor houses the private gourmet dining rooms, booked for business dinners and special occasions. The wine cellar — accessed by a separate spiral staircase — hosts multi-course tasting dinners for up to eight diners, with pairings drawn from the cellar's deep French holdings. The outdoor garden, open only for daylight-hours service, hosts high tea overlooking the lake.

Le Planteur is, in the estimation of both the expatriate community and visiting Asian food writers, the single best restaurant in Yangon. It remains accessible by reservation even during peak travel season. Alcohol service is intact and the wine list — substantially French with a respectable Italian section — remains one of the most serious in Myanmar.

Why It Works for Proposal

Le Planteur is the unquestioned proposal restaurant of Yangon. The setting — a 1902 mansion, a lakeside garden, a private wine cellar — does the atmospheric work that most modern fine-dining rooms struggle to achieve. For client dinners with visitors who have never been to Myanmar, it is the Yangon address that makes the country's serious dining scene immediately legible.
