About Le Planteur

Felix Eppisser earned a Michelin star at Rigiblick in Zürich; in Yangon he cooks inside a 1902 colonial mansion set on an acre of waterfront gardens on Inya Lake. He and his wife Lucia took over Le Planteur, a fine-dining address that has run since 1998, and built it into three rooms under one roof: the Gourmet dining room, a casual Bistro, and a lakeside High Tea lounge. The Gourmet kitchen offers three tasting menus from 590,000 to 790,000 kyat — about US$130 to US$210 a head — at 80 University Avenue in Bahan Township.

The Kitchen

Eppisser cooks French haute cuisine with a careful Asian inflection, and at the Gourmet room that arrives as three set journeys: the Legend menu of dishes that have defined the kitchen across twenty-seven years, the modern New Horizons menu, and a vegetable-led Garden menu drawn from the restaurant's own plots at Inle Lake. The Legend menu runs 690,000 kyat and turns on a foie gras chawanmushi under a black-truffle emulsion and a roasted wild duck with juniper jus. The New Horizons menu, at 790,000 kyat, pushes further: Oscietra caviar over Hokkaido scallop carpaccio, A5 Kobe beef seared over binchotan with black-truffle mash, koji-breaded halibut in dashi and beurre blanc.

Each menu lets you swap a signature course — black cod in miso cream against king crab ravioli in lemongrass broth on the Legend, seared foie gras against the halibut on New Horizons. A weekday three-course business lunch is 160,000 kyat, which makes the room a serious option for a client meeting. Service is attentive and unhurried; this is a kitchen built for lingering rather than turning tables, and the wine cellar runs deep enough to anchor a long evening.

The Room

The setting is the reason to come. Guests arrive through the gardens for a glass on the terrace, then descend a candle-lit stairway to a dining room surrounded by well-heeled locals and a dozen languages. Lighting is low and candle-bright, the sound level is hushed, and tables are spaced for privacy across several intimate rooms plus an al fresco area. Dress is smart — a blazer or a nice dress reads as right, not overdressed — and a parade of geese crossing the lawn back to the lake is a real part of the evening. Private rooms range from the two-seat Wine Larder to the twelve-seat Chinese Pavilion.

Best for a Proposal

Book this room for a proposal because three things line up that almost no other Yangon table can offer: a private candle-lit setting on the water, a tasting long enough to build the evening toward the moment, and staff practised at discreet special-occasion service. Reserve the Wine Larder or the Chinese Pavilion for two, order the Legend menu, and ask for the terrace at dusk. The garden and the lake do the rest. For the wider field, see our guide to the best restaurants for a proposal and the best French restaurants worldwide.

Not for

Not for a quick or budget meal — the Gourmet tasting menus run three to four hours and start at 590,000 kyat. For a fast bite, use the Bistro or the High Tea lounge instead.

Frequently Asked

Is Le Planteur worth it?

Yes — for a special-occasion dinner Le Planteur is the most accomplished French table in Yangon. Chef Felix Eppisser, who earned a Michelin star at Rigiblick in Zürich, runs three tasting menus from 590,000 to 790,000 kyat (roughly US$130 to US$210) inside a 1902 mansion on Inya Lake. The cooking is precise and the garden setting is hard to match anywhere in Myanmar. Treat it as the evening's main event and book the Gourmet room, not the casual Bistro.

How hard is it to book Le Planteur?

Not hard, but worth planning. Le Planteur takes reservations directly through leplanteur.net, by phone on +95 9 791 845 419, or on Viber, and online bookings get 10% off. Weekend dinners and the private rooms — the Wine Larder, the Cage Room, the Chinese Pavilion — fill first, so reserve a few days ahead for a Friday or Saturday. The address is 80 University Avenue in Bahan Township, near Inya Lake; the restaurant runs complimentary cars for some guests.

What is the dress code at Le Planteur?

Smart. There is no jacket requirement, but this is the dressiest dining room in Yangon and most guests treat it that way — a blazer or a nice dress reads as right rather than overdressed. The Gourmet room is candle-lit and quiet; the garden terrace is more relaxed for a pre-dinner glass. Neat smart-casual is the floor. Given the price and the multi-course pace, dressing for the occasion suits the room.

What is the average meal price at Le Planteur?

The Gourmet tasting menus run 590,000 kyat for the vegetable-led Garden menu, 690,000 for the Legend menu of iconic dishes, and 790,000 for the New Horizons menu — about US$130 to US$210 per person before wine. A weekday three-course business lunch is 160,000 kyat. Add a wine pairing and a couple should plan for a substantial evening. There is also a casual Bistro and a lakeside High Tea lounge at lower prices.

Is Le Planteur good for a proposal?

Yes — it is the obvious choice for a proposal in Yangon. The 1902 mansion sits on an acre of waterfront gardens with a candle-lit stairway down to the dining room, and the private Wine Larder or Chinese Pavilion can be booked for two. Order the Legend menu, ask for a table on the terrace at dusk, and see our best restaurants for a proposal for more.

What should I order at Le Planteur?

On the Legend menu, the foie gras chawanmushi under a black-truffle emulsion and the roasted wild duck with juniper jus are the dishes that have defined the kitchen for two decades. The New Horizons menu leans modern — A5 Kobe beef over binchotan with black-truffle mash, koji-breaded halibut — while the Garden menu builds around produce from the restaurant's own Inle Lake plots. Vegetarians are genuinely well served here.
