Rak Talay — 'love the sea' in Thai — is Pimalai's beachfront restaurant, three steps from the sand on the southern end of Ba Kan Tiang Bay. The seating is in the sand itself: low-set tables, tiki torches, bare-feet service, and a kitchen that runs a wood-fired grill and a wok line on the beach all evening.
The menu is straightforward Thai seafood. Whole grilled tiger prawns, grilled sea bass, som tam, grilled squid, and a pot of phad thai or pad kra prao to round out the meal. The kitchen will work from the tank — the restaurant keeps a small live-tank of the day's catch by the entrance — so you can pick your fish and preparation.
Sunset is the reservation everyone wants. The sun sets over Ba Kan Tiang Bay directly in front of the restaurant; the sky on clear evenings runs pink-and-orange for forty minutes. The bar behind the seating area runs a reasonable cocktail program, and a chilled bottle of Thai sauvignon blanc is the easy order.
The dinner is the simplest date on the island — barefoot, low lights, salt air, no dress requirement, and the Andaman in front of you. It works as a quiet second-night dinner after a more formal Seven Seas or Spice N' Rice evening.
Why it fits First Date
First Date belongs here because Rak Talay is the barefoot dinner without bravado — no dress code, no tasting menu, no reservation anxiety, just grilled fish by candlelight on a good beach. The bar for a Koh Lanta first date is this room.
