Koh Lanta — Editorial Overview
Koh Lanta is the long, narrow Andaman island south-west of Krabi — thirty kilometres of beaches, a mangrove interior, and a dining scene that has deliberately stayed small. The serious fine-dining is concentrated at a single property — Pimalai Resort & Spa on Ba Kan Tiang Bay — with a handful of independent beach restaurants along the western coast and in the photogenic Lanta Old Town on the east.
Dining Neighbourhoods
Ba Kan Tiang Bay on the south-west coast is the luxury address — Pimalai operates three of the island's top five dining rooms. Long Beach (Phra Ae) in the north-west is the independent-restaurant strip, with a mix of Thai kitchens and Italian-run beach bars. Lanta Old Town on the east coast — a wooden-pier fishing village on stilts over the sea — is where the most atmospheric casual seafood sits.
Dining Culture & Reservations
Koh Lanta's kitchen is Southern Thai — rich in turmeric, shrimp paste, fresh coconut, and the chilli-forward curries that distinguish the region from the central plains. Muslim families run most of the fishing fleet, so pork is less common here than elsewhere in Thailand. Dress is barefoot-casual — even at Pimalai, long trousers and closed shoes are not required. Tipping 10 per cent on top of service charge is normal at resorts.
Tips From the Editors
Book Seven Seas and Spice N' Rice at Pimalai two weeks ahead in high season (December–March). For independent dining, drive to Lanta Old Town at sunset — the wooden piers along Old Town Road are the most photogenic dinner in Krabi Province. The private-beach dinner at Pimalai (advance booking, full beach to yourselves) is the proposal venue of the island.
