Darjeeling does not have a Michelin Guide. It has something older — a collection of dining rooms built by British tea planters, Indian hoteliers, and Tibetan-Nepali chefs that have been operating, some of them, for more than a century. Glenary's has been a café-restaurant on the Mall since 1885. The Elgin's dining room has been serving dinner by candlelight since the 1920s. Taj Chia Kutir's restaurants — Sonargaon and Chia Verandah — opened in 2019 inside the Makaibari Tea Estate and immediately set a new benchmark for Himalayan fine dining. What the city lacks in Michelin density it replaces with atmosphere that cannot be engineered and history that cannot be bought.

Neighborhoods

Chowrasta / The Mall — the pedestrian plaza at the heart of old Darjeeling. Glenary's is a minute's walk from here; the colonial bandstand is the orientation point of the town. Taj Chia Kutir / Makaibari Tea Estate — forty minutes south of Darjeeling proper, but the Taj resort here is home to Sonargaon and Chia Verandah, two of the region's finest dining rooms, set inside a working tea estate. Kakjhora / The Elgin — the heritage hotel district above the Mall, home to The Elgin's candlelit dining room. Hotel Bellevue / Hooker Road — the upper ridge, where Ara Restaurant and several mid-tier rooms operate with panoramic views.

Dining Culture

The cuisine here braids four traditions: the Raj-era East Indian and zamindari cooking that still defines the heritage hotel kitchens; the Nepali-Tibetan momo-and-thukpa tradition that is the everyday food of the town; the Bengali cooking carried up from Kolkata by generations of summer visitors; and the tea itself — Darjeeling's first-flush Makaibari, Margaret's Hope, Castleton, and Happy Valley teas are ingredients in the menus of the best rooms, not simply beverages. Dining at Sonargaon means tasting dishes that were developed for Calcutta drawing rooms in the nineteenth century, served with a pot of the tea that made the region's fortune.

Reservations

Reservations at Taj Chia Kutir's restaurants and The Elgin's dining room are essential year-round, particularly in April-May (first-flush tea season) and October-November (post-monsoon clarity, Kanchenjunga visible). Book via Taj's central reservation system for Sonargaon and Chia Verandah; direct phone calls work for Glenary's and the smaller hotels. The toy train up from Ghum operates mornings; many diners combine a morning train ride with lunch at one of the Chowrasta restaurants.

Practical Notes

Dress code: Smart casual; Darjeeling's altitude means evenings are cool year-round (often 5-10°C), so warm layers are functional rather than stylistic. The heritage hotels appreciate a jacket at dinner but do not mandate it. Tipping: Ten per cent is standard at fine-dining restaurants; most include a service charge. At hotel dining rooms, round-up tipping for exceptional service (₹100-500) is common. Timing: Dinner begins early — 7pm to 9pm is the main window. The town goes quiet after 10pm; cab availability drops off sharply at night. Language: English is universally spoken at all fine-dining restaurants and hotels. Nepali, Hindi, and Bengali are the local languages. The altitude: At 2,050 metres, drinking alcohol has a stronger effect than at sea level, and the cold nights amplify the sense of it. Pace dinners accordingly.
