About Glenary's

Glenary's has stood on Nehru Road near the Mall and the Clock Tower since 1885, when it began life as an Italian-founded confectionery. Over the decades it grew into a full bakery, tea room and restaurant, and it is now run by the Edwards family — one of the oldest eateries in the hill station and a fixed point of any visit to Darjeeling.

The upstairs tea room looks out over the valley, and the ground-floor bakery has been turning out cakes and breads since before Independence.

The Kitchen

The signature is the blueberry cheesecake — for many regulars the single reason to climb the hill — served alongside Darjeeling tea from the surrounding estates. The restaurant menu runs to continental comfort: fish and chips, pork chops with fries, roast chicken, shepherd's pie and a mixed grill, plus pizzas and fresh loaves from the bakery counter.

It is gentle on the wallet: the bakery and café run from about ₹150 a head, with a full restaurant meal for two around ₹1,000–1,300.

The Room

The pleasure is in the lingering. The first-floor tea room is bright and wood-trimmed with windows onto the hills, while the bakery below is all glass cases and the smell of fresh bread; a pub, Buzz, sits beneath. It is unhurried and timeworn in the best way, made for an idle morning over tea and a slice.

For a sit-down dinner elsewhere in town, Sonargaon at the Mayfair and the dining room at The Elgin are the heritage-hotel alternatives.

Best for a Leisurely Solo Breakfast

Glenary's is made for an unhurried solo morning — a window seat, a pot of Darjeeling and a slice of cheesecake while the valley clears. It is just as good for a relaxed first date over tea or a casual birthday treat from the bakery counter.

Not for

Not for fine dining, fast service at peak season, or anyone after authentic local Nepali-Tibetan food — this is a continental bakery and tea room.
