The Room

Ara Restaurant sits on Hooker Road on Darjeeling's upper ridge, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Kanchenjunga massif. On a clear morning the view is exactly the postcard; on a clear evening it is better. The room seats around sixty across a main dining floor and a small terrace used in spring and autumn.

The menu is multi-cuisine — Indian, Tibetan-Nepali, Bengali, Continental, Chinese — a format that in most cities signals mediocrity but here reflects the genuine multi-cultural composition of Darjeeling itself. Chef Pemba Sherpa is Tibetan-trained, and the Tibetan and Nepali sections of the menu (momos, thukpa, gundruk) are the sincere strengths. The Bengali fish curries and the Continental grills are solid rather than exceptional.

The drinks list runs local craft beers, Darjeeling tea cocktails, and a short Indian and international wine list. Prices are fair. Service is warm and family-run in feel.

Dinner runs ₹2,000 to ₹3,200 per head with drinks. Reservations recommended for dinner, especially for a window table. Walk-ins typical mid-week.

Why It's Best for First Date

For a First Date, Ara Restaurant's combination of a Kanchenjunga-view window table, a menu that lets two diners sample across several Himalayan cuisines in a single meal, and an unpretentious warm service style makes it a natural choice. The room is neither intimidating nor so quiet that conversation feels exposed.
