In the basement of the Tradition Julen Hotel, the Julen family, who built the house in 1937 and raise their own Valais black-nose sheep, run one of Zermatt's warmest rooms. The cottage-style room is dark, snug and unselfconscious, the kind of place a single diner is tucked into a corner with a glass of Valais red rather than made to feel on display. Chez Vrony. The Findeln mountain restaurant is a glorious lunch off the slopes, but it is built for groups in ski boots sharing the famous burger and rosti. A solo trek up the mountain is a lot of effort for a table for one.
