Best Rooftop Restaurants in San Francisco 2026

Rooftop & terrace dining · San Francisco · 6 roofs ranked · Updated June 2026

Only two of the rooftops in this city run a real kitchen, which is the first thing to know before you book one. San Francisco does rooftops differently from Miami or New York: the fog and the cool evenings mean the best roofs are built around fire pits and golden-hour light rather than all-night parties. The strongest of them, atop an RH gallery in Dogpatch, plates lobster rolls with caviar; the rest range from a true Nikkei kitchen above SoMa to bar-forward lounges with a view. Here is who each suits, what to order, and how to book it. Six, ranked on view, food and the cocktail program.

1.The Palm Court at RH

Live-fire American · RH San Francisco · Dogpatch

RH's rooftop dining room above the Dogpatch gallery, the most serious food of any roof in the city. Book it for caviar and a long lunch in the light.

The Palm Court is the rooftop restaurant atop the RH gallery in the historic Bethlehem Steel building at 590 20th Street in Dogpatch, with a glass conservatory and a terrace of fire pits. The kitchen runs a live-fire American menu, and the dish to order is the pair of mini lobster rolls topped with Petrossian caviar at 34 dollars, or the chips and dip with caviar at 95. It opened in 2021 and remains the rare rooftop where the food matches the setting. Come for a long, light-filled lunch.

Walk in or book through RH; order the lobster rolls and a glass of Champagne.

2.KAIYO Rooftop

Nikkei seafood · SoMa · Twelfth floor

A genuine twelfth-floor Nikkei room above SoMa with a full crudo and ceviche menu. The pick for sushi with a skyline.

KAIYO Rooftop is the twelfth-floor sibling of KAIYO Abaca, a true rooftop at 701 3rd Street in SoMa serving a full Nikkei menu rather than bar snacks. The kanpachi tiradito in guava leche de tigre at 17 dollars and the grilled pulpo a la parrilla at 18 are the dishes to start with. It opened on the roof in 2022 and draws a younger downtown crowd at sunset. Reserve ahead for a weekend table and ask to sit on the open-air side.

Book on Resy; start with the tiradito and a pisco sour.

3.Charmaine's

Rooftop lounge · Mid-Market · 120 feet up

The San Francisco Proper's rooftop bar, 120 feet above Market Street with the best cocktails of the group. Go for sunset and shareable plates, not a full dinner.

Charmaine's sits atop the San Francisco Proper Hotel at 1100 Market Street in Mid-Market, a Kelly Wearstler-designed roof 120 feet up with open-air fire pits and a long city view. It runs bar-forward, with executive chef Jason Franey's shareable plates rather than a sit-down menu; the Charmaine's hot dog at 14 dollars and a beef slider at 12 are the order. Come for cocktails at sunset and keep dinner for elsewhere. There is a per-person food and drink minimum for larger groups.

Arrive before sunset; the best fire-pit seats go first.

4.Cavaña

Latin American rooftop · Mission Bay · LUMA Hotel

The LUMA Hotel's Latin rooftop over Mission Bay, strong on agave and live music. A relaxed pick for short ribs and East Bay views.

Cavaña is the rooftop bar and shareable-plates room atop the LUMA Hotel at 100 Channel Street in Mission Bay, with views across to the East Bay and an agave-led drinks list. The kitchen, run by chef Alex Reccio, cooks Latin American plates, and the slow-roasted costillar de res short ribs with chimichurri are the dish to share. It opened in February 2023 and leans toward a relaxed, music-led night. Reserve ahead on a game night near the ballpark.

Book on Resy; share the short rib and order a mezcal flight.

5.620 Jones

American garden terrace · Lower Nob Hill · Near Union Square

One of the largest open-air terraces in the city, a few blocks from Union Square. The pick for a big, sunny group lunch.

620 Jones runs a sprawling second-floor garden terrace at 620 Jones Street in Lower Nob Hill, a few blocks from Union Square, with heat lamps and one of the largest open-air dining patios downtown. The kitchen cooks a contemporary American menu of flatbreads, salads and shareable plates, with a Margherita pizza and papas bravas among the things to order. It suits a large, sunny group more than a quiet dinner. Reserve the terrace ahead for weekend brunch.

Book on OpenTable; ask for a terrace table in the sun.

6.Dirty Habit

New American terrace · SoMa · Hotel Zelos, 5th floor

Hotel Zelos's fifth-floor terrace with a 640-bottle whiskey list. Go for the spirits and shareable plates rather than the view alone.

Dirty Habit occupies the fifth-floor heated terrace of Hotel Zelos at 12 4th Street in SoMa, near Union Square, a moody indoor-outdoor room better known for its bar than its skyline. Executive chef Derek Watson cooks New American shareable plates, and the kitchen sends out a smash burger, Korean-style wings and charred octopus to go with a list of more than 640 whiskeys. It suits a late drink and a few plates. Reserve ahead and sit on the terrace when the heaters are on.

Book on OpenTable; let the bar steer you through the whiskey.

Closed, do not plan around it

El Techo de Lolinda closed in 2025 after twelve years; the Mission rooftop is now a different restaurant, Cubita. Everdene atop the Virgin Hotel is also no longer operating. Older rooftop round-ups still list both, so cross them off.

Sky bars, not restaurants

Top of the Mark and the Hilton's Cityscape Lounge have the altitude, but they pour cocktails and appetizers rather than serve dinner. Go up for a drink and a view, then book one of the rooms above for the meal.

How to do a San Francisco rooftop right

San Francisco is foggy and cool more often than visitors expect, so check the forecast and aim for a clear, still evening; the terraces at RH, KAIYO and Charmaine's are best in the golden hour before the marine layer rolls in. For the food, RH Palm Court and KAIYO are the two genuine rooftop kitchens, so order accordingly elsewhere.

Book weekend tables ahead, since the open-air seats go first, and ask specifically for an outdoor or terrace table rather than the indoor room. For a real dinner with a view, pair RH or KAIYO with a sweater; for the scene, Charmaine's at sunset is the one.

Frequently asked

What is the best rooftop restaurant in San Francisco?

The Palm Court at RH San Francisco is our top rooftop for 2026. It is the rooftop dining room above the RH gallery at 590 20th Street in Dogpatch, with a live-fire kitchen and a terrace of fire pits, known for mini lobster rolls topped with caviar at 34 dollars. It is the rare San Francisco roof where the cooking matches the view.

Which San Francisco rooftops actually serve dinner?

The Palm Court at RH and KAIYO Rooftop are the two rooftops here with a full kitchen rather than bar snacks. Charmaine's, Cavaña and Dirty Habit run bar-forward, with shareable plates alongside the cocktails. If you want a proper rooftop dinner, book RH or KAIYO; for drinks and small plates with a view, the others deliver.

Do you need a reservation for San Francisco rooftop restaurants?

Yes for a table, especially on weekends and at sunset, when the open-air seats go first. KAIYO, Cavaña, 620 Jones and Dirty Habit take reservations on Resy or OpenTable. Charmaine's runs more as a walk-in rooftop bar, so arrive before sunset to claim a good fire-pit spot rather than counting on a table.

When is the best time to visit a San Francisco rooftop?

Aim for a clear, still evening in the golden hour before the fog rolls in, typically late afternoon into early evening. San Francisco runs cool and foggy more often than visitors expect, so bring a layer even in summer. The fire-pit terraces at RH, Charmaine's and KAIYO are at their best on a calm, clear night.

How much do San Francisco rooftop restaurants cost?

Plan on an upper-end spend at RH Palm Court, where caviar service runs to 95 dollars, and a mid-to-upper spend at KAIYO, where starters sit around 17 to 18 dollars. Charmaine's, Cavaña, 620 Jones and Dirty Habit are more forgiving on the food but carry cocktail-bar drink prices and, at Charmaine's, a group minimum.
