La Pergola sits on the top floor of the Rome Cavalieri, on Monte Mario, the highest hill in the city, and on a clear night St Peter's dome floats over the rooftops from your table. Rome's best dining views come from above, almost always from the roof of a grand hotel, and the gap between a great terrace and a great kitchen is wide. These six rooftops earn their place on both counts: Heinz Beck's three-star La Pergola, Giuseppe Di Iorio's Colosseum-facing Aroma, the freshly starred Terrazza at the Hotel Eden, Imago over the Spanish Steps, Mirabelle's seventh-floor roof garden, and a Trastevere outlier in Jacopa. 1.La Pergola

Heinz Beck's three-star room on Rome's highest hill, with the whole city and St Peter's below. Save it for the landmark dinner.

La Pergola occupies the top floor of the Rome Cavalieri, a Waldorf Astoria hotel on Monte Mario at Via Alberto Cadlolo 101, the highest hill in the city. Heinz Beck has run the kitchen since 1994 and his fagottelli La Pergola, pasta parcels filled with a carbonara cream, remain the signature; the tasting menus run from about 290 euros for seven courses to 350 for ten. It is Rome's only three-star in the 2026 Michelin Guide and reopened in mid-2025 after a full refurbishment that added a 53,000-bottle cellar. The terrace and dining room look across the rooftops to St Peter's dome. Reserve a month ahead, ask for a window table, and dress for it.

2.Aroma

Mediterranean · Monti · One Michelin star, Colosseum view

Giuseppe Di Iorio's starred terrace stares straight at the Colosseum. Book it for the single most famous view in Rome.

Aroma sits on the rooftop of Palazzo Manfredi at Via Labicana 125 in Monti, with a terrace that faces the Colosseum head on across the street. Giuseppe Di Iorio has held one Michelin star here since 2014, cooking a refined Roman menu whose carbonara, built on smoked guanciale di Sauris and a slow-cooked yolk, is the plate to order; tasting menus run roughly 120 to 250 euros. The room is glassed in through winter so the view holds year round. This is the booking for a proposal or an anniversary where the Colosseum is the third guest at the table. Reserve two to three weeks ahead and ask specifically for a Colosseum-side table.

3.La Terrazza

Salvatore Bianco's freshly starred rooftop runs the panorama from the Quirinale to St Peter's. Book it for a polished hotel-rooftop dinner.

La Terrazza tops the Hotel Eden, a Dorchester Collection hotel at Via Ludovisi 49 in the Ludovisi quarter above Via Veneto. Salvatore Bianco took the kitchen in April 2024 and won the room its first Michelin star in the 2026 Guide, cooking a Campanian-inflected menu whose spaghetti, dressed with tomato and barely anything else, anchors the carte; tasting menus start around 180 euros. The glazed terrace sweeps from the Quirinale across the rooftops to St Peter's dome. It is the most polished of the hotel rooftops and the freshest serious arrival on this list. Reserve two weeks ahead and ask for a terrace table at dusk.

4.Imago

Andrea Antonini's starred room frames the Spanish Steps through floor-to-ceiling glass. Book it for the best Trinita dei Monti view in the city.

Imago crowns the Hotel Hassler at Piazza Trinita dei Monti 6, at the very top of the Spanish Steps, with floor-to-ceiling windows over the bell towers and the rooftops beyond. Andrea Antonini has run the kitchen since 2019 and holds one Michelin star in the 2026 Guide, cooking a contemporary Italian menu that changes twice a year; the tasting menus land around 230 euros. The view is the most central of any rooftop here, looking down the Steps and across the old centre toward St Peter's. Reserve two to three weeks ahead, ask for a window table, and take the longer menu if the room is the occasion.

5.Mirabelle

Classic Italian · Ludovisi · Seventh-floor roof garden

Stefano Marzetti's seventh-floor roof garden looks across to St Peter's and the Gianicolo. Book it for an old-school panoramic dinner.

Mirabelle occupies the seventh and top floor of the Hotel Splendide Royal at Via di Porta Pinciana 14, on the edge of Villa Borghese in Ludovisi. Stefano Marzetti has led the kitchen for more than a decade, and the Settimo Cielo, a chocolate and hazelnut dessert, is the long-standing signature; the seven-course tasting runs about 170 to 180 euros and the cellar holds some 750 labels. The roof-garden terrace looks past Trinita dei Monti to St Peter's dome and the Gianicolo. It carries a Michelin Plate rather than a star, but the panorama and the classic service make it a grown-up evening. Reserve a week or two ahead and ask for a terrace table.

6.Jacopa

A Trastevere rooftop over the red roofs and the Aventine, run by two Il Pagliaccio alumni. Try it for a relaxed view dinner off the hotel circuit.

Jacopa runs a summer rooftop above the Hotel San Francesco at Via Jacopa de' Settesoli 7 in Trastevere, looking across the red roofs of the rione to the Aventine hill. Jacopo Ricci and Piero Drago, both trained at the two-star Il Pagliaccio, cook a short Roman menu where the alici fritte, fried anchovies, are the thing to order, with a five-course tasting at around 48 euros. The terrace runs roughly June through October; out of season the restaurant moves indoors and loses the view. It is the casual, lower-priced option here, and the only rooftop on the list off the luxury-hotel circuit. Reserve ahead for a summer evening and ask for a terrace table.

The rooftop people overrate

Il Palazzetto is a wine bar, not a kitchen

Il Palazzetto, the Hassler-run terrace just above the Spanish Steps, has one of the most photographed views in Rome and floods social feeds as a rooftop restaurant. It is an aperitivo and wine bar serving pinsa and charcuterie boards, with no chef and no kitchen brigade behind it. Go for a sunset glass of wine; for a rooftop dinner that earns the view, take Aroma or Imago instead.

How to book a Rome rooftop

Rome's best rooftops sit on top of hotels, which means the tables are finite and the window seats go first. Reserve the starred rooms, La Pergola, Aroma, La Terrazza and Imago, two to three weeks ahead, and ask explicitly for a table by the window or on the terrace rather than the inner room, where you lose the point of coming.

Time the booking for dusk so you get the city in daylight and then lit. The hotel rooftops run year round, with glass enclosures in winter, while Jacopa in Trastevere is a summer-only terrace. If you are marking an occasion, say so when you reserve, and at Aroma name the Colosseum side of the room.
