Perth's view splits between the city and the coast. The Swan River winds past the towers and Kings Park in the centre, and the Indian Ocean runs the western beaches at Cottesloe and Fremantle, all of it facing west for the sunset. The hazard is the rooftop bar that sells the light and serves a snack. The six rooms below earn the view with a kitchen, from a three-hatted rooftop over the river to a beach-house room in the dunes at Leighton. Sunset is the order across the city, when the sun drops behind the skyline or straight into the ocean.

1.Wildflower

Modern Australian · Perth CBD · State Buildings rooftop

Stephen Thompson's three-hatted rooftop room at the State Buildings over the Swan River; book the seasonal menu at dusk.

Wildflower crowns the State Buildings in Perth's CBD, a glass pavilion on the rooftop with sweeping views of the Swan River and the south of the city. Head chef Stephen Thompson, Michelin-trained, builds four-, six- and eight-course menus around the six seasons of the Noongar calendar, native ingredients and marron drawn from the state's farmers and fishers, and the room holds three hats and three glasses in the Australian Good Food Guide. The cooking matches the outlook, rare for a view room. Prices run to the top of the city, with the eight-course around A$220. Book a window table at dusk and let the seasonal menu lead.

Reserve direct; window at dusk, seasonal menu.

2.C Restaurant

Modern Australian · Perth CBD · St Georges Terrace, Level 33

Western Australia's only revolving restaurant, 33 floors over the city and the Swan; book an early dinner for sunset.

C Restaurant occupies level 33 of St Martins Tower on St Georges Terrace, Western Australia's only revolving restaurant, turning a full 360 degrees every ninety minutes over the city, the Swan River and out toward the hills and the coast. The kitchen runs a modern Australian menu strong on seafood, with the seafood platter and the barramundi among the orders and mains around A$45 to A$65, and the slow rotation gives every table the whole panorama across a meal. The view, not a destination kitchen, is the reason to book. Treat it as the city laid out below across the dinner. Reserve a window seat for an early dinner so the rotation carries you through sunset over the river.

Reserve direct; window seat, early dinner.

3.Fraser's

Modern Australian · Kings Park · West Perth

Chris Taylor's Kings Park room over the city and the Swan River, open since 1993; book a terrace table for sunset.

Fraser's sits in Kings Park among the gum trees, looking over the city skyline and the Swan River from the best natural vantage in Perth. Executive chef Chris Taylor runs a refined contemporary menu built on the best Western Australian produce, the marron and the local seafood among the orders, with mains around A$45 to A$60. The park setting, high over the river, gives an open view of the city and the water that the tower rooms can not match. Open since 1993, it is the city's long-standing view table. It is the Perth lookout room to the rooftop and revolving rooms in the CBD. Book a window or terrace table for sunset, when the light drops behind the city across the river.

Reserve direct; terrace table for sunset.

4.Il Lido

Italian · Cottesloe · beachfront

An Italian canteen across from Cottesloe Beach facing the Indian Ocean sunset; book a terrace table for the hour before dusk.

Il Lido sits across the road from Cottesloe Beach, an Italian canteen and a Cottesloe fixture since 2007, with the room and terrace turned to the Indian Ocean and the famous Cottesloe sunset. The kitchen runs all-day Italian, handmade pasta and wood-fired plates, with mains around A$35 to A$55, and the west-facing ocean view, the sun dropping straight into the water, is the order. It is one of Perth's classic beach rooms. Think of it as the Cottesloe answer to the city's high view tables. Book a terrace table for the hour before sunset, when the light goes gold over the ocean, and settle in for a long evening.

Reserve direct; terrace, hour before sunset.

5.Gibney

Modern Australian · Cottesloe · beachfront

A two-level beach room above Cottesloe with a rooftop over the Indian Ocean; book the rooftop for the Cottesloe sunset.

Gibney sits above Cottesloe Beach, a two-level room and rooftop opened in 2021 with a wide view over the Indian Ocean and the Cottesloe sands. The kitchen runs a modern Australian menu strong on seafood and share plates, with mains around A$35 to A$55, and the rooftop, west-facing over the water, catches the full Cottesloe sunset. It is the newer beach room to Il Lido down the road, built around the ocean view. Come for the rooftop at sunset rather than the ground floor, book ahead on a clear evening, and time it for the sun going down over the water.

Reserve direct; rooftop at sunset.

6.Bib and Tucker

Modern Australian · North Fremantle · Leighton Beach

Scott Bridger's beach-house room in the dunes at Leighton Beach; book a terrace table for the sunset over the ocean.

Bib and Tucker stands among the dunes at Leighton Beach in North Fremantle, a beach-house room and terrace looking straight onto the Indian Ocean and a Leighton fixture since 2013. Co-owner and chef Scott Bridger runs a modern Australian menu with no fuss on quality, the snapper and wood-fired seafood among the orders, with mains around A$40 to A$60. The ocean view, the surf at the foot of the terrace, is the headline, west-facing for the sunset. It is the Fremantle-end beach table to the Cottesloe rooms north. Book a terrace table for the late afternoon, and time it for the sun dropping into the ocean over a long evening.

Reserve direct; terrace, late afternoon.

Avoid for a view

The bar, not a restaurant

The Aviary and the city's other rooftop bars sell the sunset with a short snack menu rather than a kitchen. Go up for the drink and the view, then eat properly at one of the rooms above or back at the beach.

Great kitchen, no view

Must Winebar in Highgate is one of Perth's best kitchens and cellars, but it is an enclosed bistro with no view at all. Book it for the food and the wine, and take the river or the ocean another night.

Reservation strategy for a Perth view table

Perth's view splits between the city and the coast. The city rooms hold the river and skyline, Wildflower on the State Buildings rooftop, C Restaurant revolving 33 floors up on St Georges Terrace, and Fraser's looking down from Kings Park, while the beach rooms, Il Lido and Gibney at Cottesloe and Bib and Tucker at Leighton, face the Indian Ocean. The whole coast is west-facing, so sunset is the order, and the prize is a terrace or window table for the hour the sun drops into the sea.

Book Wildflower well ahead, since it is the city's hardest table and its three-hatted kitchen is small, and reserve the Cottesloe and Leighton terraces early on clear summer evenings, when the sunset crowd fills them. For C Restaurant and Fraser's, ask for a window seat and time an early dinner so the light is on the river as you eat.

Frequently asked

What is the best restaurant with a view in Perth?

For the kitchen, Wildflower on the State Buildings rooftop, Stephen Thompson's three-hatted room over the Swan River, is the city's best. For the coast, Bib and Tucker at Leighton and Il Lido at Cottesloe face the Indian Ocean sunset. Book Wildflower well ahead, and the beach terraces early on a clear evening.

Is there a revolving restaurant in Perth?

C Restaurant on level 33 of St Martins Tower is Western Australia's only revolving restaurant, turning a full circle every ninety minutes over the city, the Swan River and out toward the hills. Wildflower's rooftop at the State Buildings and Fraser's in Kings Park give the other high city views. All read best from a window seat at sunset.

Where can you eat over the beach in Perth?

Cottesloe and Leighton hold the ocean rooms. Il Lido sits across from Cottesloe Beach and Gibney above it, both west-facing for the sunset, while Bib and Tucker stands in the dunes at Leighton Beach in North Fremantle. The whole coast faces west, so book a terrace table for the hour the sun drops into the sea.

How much does a view dinner in Perth cost?

Plan on A$35 to A$65 for mains at the beach and revolving rooms, Il Lido, Gibney, Bib and Tucker and C Restaurant. Wildflower runs higher, with its eight-course menu around A$220, and Fraser's sits A$45 to A$60. The sunset terraces carry the demand on clear evenings, so the cost is as much in booking ahead as money.

When should you book a Perth view table?

Well ahead for Wildflower, the city's hardest table, and early for the Cottesloe and Leighton terraces on clear summer evenings. Sunset is the hour across Perth, since the coast and the river both face west. For C Restaurant and Fraser's, ask for a window seat and book an early dinner so the light is on the river as the room turns or the sun drops behind the city.
