Maui is built for eating with children: tables on the sand, shave ice down the road, and a beachfront grill where dinner comes with a sunset and a hula show. We have kept this list to rooms that are open and thriving after the 2023 Lahaina fire, away from the burn zone.
1.Hula Grill Kaanapali
The Maui family gold standard: a real sand floor at the Barefoot Bar, a keiki menu and nightly music by the beach.
Hula Grill, in Whalers Village right on Kaanapali Beach, is the Maui family dinner everyone copies. Its Barefoot Bar has an actual sand floor under thatched umbrellas, tables steps from the water, and a keiki menu, so children can come straight off the beach with sandy feet and nobody minds.
The Barefoot Bar is walk-in only, which suits the unpredictability of a day with kids, while the main dining room takes reservations for a calmer sit-down. There is live music nightly and a daily happy hour from two to four; expect mid-range prices and a sunset that does half the entertaining.
2.Mama's Fish House
The island's special-occasion family table: a palm-fringed cove, day-boat fish named for its fisherman, and a welcome that is warm, not stiff.
Mama's Fish House sits on its own cove just east of Paia on the north shore, untouched by the fire, and is the meal Maui families save a special night for. The setting is the thing — a palm-fringed beach, a menu that names the fisherman and the method behind each day-boat fish — and the welcome, for all the polish, is genuinely easy with children rather than hushed.
Two honest caveats: it is the splurge of this list, and it books months ahead, with no reservations for parties over eight. Treat it as the occasion dinner, plan well in advance, and it earns the fuss.
3.Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop
A cosy roadside stop between Maalaea and Lahaina with kids' cheeseburgers, quick takeout and mini pies that end every drive happily.
Leoda's, in Olowalu on the road between Maalaea and west Maui and safely outside the burn zone, is the family pit-stop the island runs on. The menu is honest comfort food — kids' cheeseburgers, sandwiches, home-baked breads — and the takeout window means you can skip the line when patience is short.
The pies are the signature and the bribe: palm-sized pineapple-macadamia, chocolate-haupia and Olowalu lime, exactly the thing to promise a child for good behaviour on a long drive. It is casual and affordable, open daily through the afternoon.
4.Monkeypod Kitchen, Wailea
A big open patio with live music most nights and a broad menu of pizzas, burgers and poke for every age.
Monkeypod Kitchen, Peter Merriman's relaxed Wailea room at the Gateway centre, is the south-shore family default. The wide open-air patio absorbs a restless table, there is live music most nights, and the menu runs broad enough — wood-fired pizzas, burgers, poke — that a picky child and a curious adult both leave full.
The party atmosphere is the point: nobody is going to glare at a noisy six-year-old here. Parents get the famous honey-lilikoi mai tai, the kitchen runs from late morning to ten at night, and the prices sit comfortably mid-range.
5.Kihei Caffe
Maui's great casual breakfast: forty-odd choices served all day, overflow seating for little ones, and a budget bill on the south shore.
Kihei Caffe is the south-shore breakfast institution, repeatedly voted the island's best, and it is built for families on a morning schedule. There are forty-plus breakfast choices served all day, outdoor casual tables, and an overflow seating area a couple of doors down that helps when you arrive with little ones and a wait.
You order at the counter, the prices are genuinely affordable, and the early hours suit children who wake at dawn on holiday. It opens at six and runs to early afternoon — come early to beat the queue.
6.Paia Fish Market, Paia
Order-at-the-counter Hawaiian seafood at communal picnic tables, with chicken and shrimp for the children who will not touch fish.
Paia Fish Market, founded in 1989 on the north shore, is the laid-back, surf-town seafood spot families fall back on — use the Paia original, since the old Lahaina location was lost to the fire. You order at the counter and eat at communal picnic-style wooden tables, an easy, low-stakes format with children.
The fish is the draw, but there is chicken, calamari and shrimp for the pickier eaters at the table, which keeps everyone fed. It is casual and affordable, open through the day into the evening, and unpretentious in exactly the way a tired family wants.
Not for everyone
Lost to the fire, or not for kids
Fleetwood's on Front Street. Mick Fleetwood's Lahaina rooftop was destroyed in the August 2023 wildfire and, as of early 2026, has not reopened — the rebuild is still in permitting. We mention it only as context: much of old Front Street is gone, so plan around Kaanapali, Wailea, Kihei and Paia, which are open and outside the burn zone.
A Wailea tasting-menu room. Maui has its share of polished resort tasting menus with a long, quiet, multi-course format and a price to match. They are lovely for a couple's evening and wrong for young children. If you want one grown-up dinner, book a sitter and let Hula Grill or Monkeypod handle the family nights.
How to eat well with children on Maui
Maui's family dining clusters by shore. West Maui's Kaanapali holds Hula Grill on the sand, with Leoda's a short drive south at Olowalu; the south shore stacks Monkeypod in Wailea, Kihei Caffe for breakfast and a Paia Fish Market location; and the north shore keeps Mama's Fish House and the original Paia Fish Market. Pick a base and most meals stay close.
Since the 2023 fire took much of Lahaina's Front Street, keep to the open, thriving areas — Kaanapali, Wailea, Kihei and Paia — and double-check any older recommendation against current status. Build the day around a beachfront dinner or two, treat Mama's as the one big occasion, and keep shave ice on the route home as the reliable bribe.
Frequently asked
What is the best family restaurant on Maui?
Hula Grill at Kaanapali is the classic: its Barefoot Bar has a real sand floor, a keiki menu and nightly music steps from the beach, and it is walk-in. For a special-occasion family dinner, Mama's Fish House in Paia is the bucket-list pick, and Monkeypod in Wailea is the easy, broad-menu south-shore default.
Are Maui restaurants open after the Lahaina fire?
Much of Lahaina's Front Street was destroyed in the August 2023 wildfire and parts remain closed or in rebuild. The good news is that the island's main family-dining areas — Kaanapali, Wailea, Kihei and Paia — were outside the burn zone and are open and busy. This list sticks to rooms confirmed open for 2026.
Where can families eat on the beach on Maui?
Hula Grill's Barefoot Bar at Kaanapali is the standout, with tables on an actual sand floor and the ocean a few steps away. Mama's Fish House sits on its own north-shore cove, and several Kihei and Wailea spots have ocean views. For the sand-between-the-toes experience with children, Hula Grill is the one to book around.
Is Mama's Fish House good for kids?
Yes, with two caveats. The welcome is genuinely warm rather than stiff, children are happy, and the cove setting is unforgettable. But it is the priciest table on this list and books months ahead, with no reservations for parties over eight, so treat it as the special-occasion family dinner and plan well in advance.
Where can I get a casual family breakfast on Maui?
Kihei Caffe on the south shore is the institution — forty-plus breakfast choices served all day, casual outdoor tables, counter ordering and budget prices, with an overflow seating area that helps when you arrive with little ones. It opens at six, which suits children who wake early on holiday, so come early to beat the queue.
