About The Grill at Hacienda del Sol

Hacienda del Sol opened in 1929 as a girls' boarding school and has been serving dinner in the Catalina Foothills, on the slope north of Tucson, ever since. The Grill is its flagship dining room, a low adobe building with a terrace that looks west across the desert toward the city lights and the sunset. Executive chef Ramon Delgado cooks Southwestern New American food from the resort's own organic gardens, and the wine programme is the headline: more than 900 labels and roughly 6,000 bottles, recognised by Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence for nineteen consecutive years.

The Kitchen

Ramon Delgado runs a Southwestern New American menu that leans on the property's organic gardens for herbs and produce, and on local game and prime cuts for the centre of the plate. The tableside Caesar is the room's signature ritual, built and tossed at your table, and the kitchen turns out seasonal Sonoran dishes alongside steaks and a rotating list of game. The deeper draw is the cellar: over 900 labels and around 6,000 bottles, the kind of list that runs six-course wine dinners at about 225 dollars a head with a single producer. A la carte mains sit roughly between 42 and 68 dollars.

The wine list earned Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence nineteen years running, and Wine Enthusiast's Award of Ultimate Distinction, one of only two in Arizona. Compare it against the field on our best steakhouse and grill rooms worldwide page, browse more in the Tucson dining guide, or read where it ranks in the ten best restaurants in Tucson.

The Room

The terrace is the seat to want. It runs along the west side of the adobe, set with white linen and lanterns, and at dusk the Catalina Foothills glow and the city lights come up below you. Inside, the dining room is warm and low-lit, beamed ceilings and a fire in the cooler months, with sound kept to an easy hum. Tables are generously spaced for a quiet conversation, dress is smart, and a sommelier works the floor for the cellar. It is a room built for a long, unhurried dinner.

Best for a Proposal

Book the terrace at sunset for a proposal because the elements do the work: a west-facing view over the foothills as the light goes, tables spaced far enough apart for a private moment, and a sommelier who can have the right bottle waiting. Call ahead, ask for an edge table on the terrace, and tell them what you are planning so they can pace the night. The historic ranch setting gives the evening a sense of occasion that a modern dining room cannot fake.

Not for

Not for a quick or budget dinner. This is a destination up in the foothills with valet and a long wine-led meal, so skip it if you want something fast, central, or cheap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Grill at Hacienda del Sol worth it?

Yes, especially for a special occasion. The combination of a 1929 foothills setting, chef Ramon Delgado's Southwestern New American cooking, and a 6,000-bottle cellar recognised by Wine Spectator for nineteen straight years makes it one of Tucson's benchmark dinners. It is not cheap, with mains around 42 to 68 dollars and wine dinners near 225 dollars, but for a proposal, an anniversary, or a client you want to impress it earns the spend.

How hard is it to book The Grill at Hacienda del Sol?

Weeknights are usually available a few days out, but the terrace at sunset and weekend tables book one to two weeks ahead, more in the high winter season. Reserve on OpenTable or call (520) 529-3500, and specifically request a terrace table for the view. Special wine dinners are ticketed events that sell out, so watch the resort calendar.

What is the dress code at The Grill at Hacienda del Sol?

Smart, resort-elegant. There is no hard jacket rule, but most diners dress up for the room and the terrace, especially at dinner. Think a collared shirt or a dress rather than shorts and sandals. The setting and the service are formal enough that you will want to match them.

What should I order at The Grill at Hacienda del Sol?

Start with the tableside Caesar for the ritual, then choose between a prime steak and the seasonal game. Lean on the sommelier and the cellar, which is the real reason to be here, and consider a by-the-glass flight if you do not want a full bottle. Ask what came out of the resort gardens that week.

Diner Reviews

Occasion: Proposal

I proposed on the terrace at sunset and the staff could not have set it up better. Edge table, the foothills going pink, a bottle the sommelier had picked for us. The tableside Caesar and a beautiful steak followed. She said yes before the entrees. Worth every dollar for the night we got.

Occasion: Impress Clients

Took two out-of-town clients here and the cellar did the talking. The list is enormous and the sommelier read the table perfectly. The room is quiet enough to actually do business, and the historic setting impressed people who have eaten everywhere. We closed the conversation over dessert.
