Dining in Muscat: A Guide

Muscat declines the showmanship of its Gulf neighbours. Where Dubai signals scale and Doha signals ambition, Oman's capital signals restraint — a sultanate where modern luxury is filtered through the architectural discipline of whitewashed walls, Ibadi understatement, and a coastline the Arabian Sea has carved into one of the most unexpectedly beautiful dining backdrops in the region. The best tables are attached to the small number of serious hotels that have chosen Muscat precisely because of what it refuses to become.

The dining vocabulary is a specific one: Omani produce — lobster from the Musandam coast, goat from the Jebel Akhdar mountains, dates from Nizwa — handled by kitchens trained at the standards of Asia's 50 Best. The Chedi Muscat and the Al Bustan Palace Ritz-Carlton anchor the fine-dining map, while the Royal Opera House's in-house restaurant brings the city's cultural centre into dialogue with its dining scene. Al Mouj and the Muttrah Corniche supply the urban fabric. Dress is modest by default; the temperature informs most evening planning; and reservations at the properties above are, during high season from November through March, to be secured weeks rather than days in advance.

Tipping is discretionary — service is often included, and Omani staff are famously uninterested in the theatrics of the tipping transaction common elsewhere in the Gulf. The Friday brunch tradition is alive but muted by regional standards. Alcohol is served at licensed venues (effectively all the hotels above) but is not part of the casual dining fabric. The value of dining in Muscat, for visitors used to Dubai's pace, is the specific absence of pace: long evenings, quiet rooms, and a hospitality culture that treats the meal as the primary event rather than as a platform for adjacent entertainments.
