About Pillars

Pillars occupies the Umaid Bhawan Palace's most photogenic architectural feature — the colonnaded verandah that wraps the palace's western face, overlooking the Baradari lawns and beyond them the sandstone bulk of Mehrangarh Fort. The restaurant operates as the hotel's all-day dining room; the afternoon tea service (3pm–5.30pm) is one of the most famous hotel tea experiences in India.

The menu is all-day international with strong Indian regional sections. A Rajasthani-style lamb biryani, a tandoori chicken tikka finished in the palace's dedicated clay oven, and an excellent pomfret tikka anchor the Indian section. The international program covers Italian pastas, French-style pan-seared fish, and a trio of house-made Indian breads. Breakfast is a full Indian-Continental service with a made-to-order omelette station.

The afternoon high tea — served daily from 3pm — includes Ceylon tea from the palace's private blend, five-tier presentation stands of finger sandwiches, scones with Jodhpur mango chutney, pastries from the palace bakery, and live classical sitar. It is worth booking two hours for; the light over Mehrangarh during late-afternoon service makes the verandah photographs that every Jodhpur travel feature eventually uses.

For a birthday, the veranda's middle section — directly facing the Baradari lawn fountain — is the correct booking. The hotel will coordinate a cake (choose pistachio-rose or the Jodhpur-specific jaggery-cardamom), a candle service that avoids the clangour of most hotel birthday celebrations, and (optionally) a classical musician duet. The meal itself — all-day service, unhurried pacing, a bill that runs roughly half of Risala for a comparable dinner — makes Pillars the most forgiving palace-dining option for a celebratory meal.

Why It's Perfect for Birthday

A colonnaded verandah facing Mehrangarh Fort, afternoon tea with classical sitar, and a cake arrangement run with palace-hotel precision. Jodhpur's most photographed birthday.
