About Plan B by the BIG Group
Plan B is the casual flagship of the BIG Group — the Kuala Lumpur hospitality group behind Ben's General Food Store and several of Malaysia's most polished neighbourhood restaurants. The Ipoh outpost opened in Kinta City in 2017 and has become the city's default modern bistro. Breakfast runs from 8am; the kitchen closes well after 10pm.
The cooking is contemporary all-day dining done carefully: truffle scrambled eggs that compare well with any equivalent dish in London or Sydney; slow-roasted beef cheek on creamed polenta; a pistachio croissant that sells out most Saturdays by noon. The wine list is unusually strong for the price point — twenty labels by the glass, most under MYR 30.
The room is bright, clean, designed with the group's trademark restraint — light wood, marble-topped counters, industrial pendant lights. Seats at the long bar counter suit solo diners and remote workers alike; every table has a convenient power outlet. The restaurant is one of the few Ipoh dining rooms that understands a single diner is not an apology — the service treats a laptop-anchored two-hour lunch as a normal customer profile.
For a low-stakes first date — coffee, pastries, an optional glass of rosé, the ability to exit gracefully at the two-hour mark — Plan B is Ipoh's single most useful answer. For a solo traveller it is the one room in town where you can spend four hours with a book and a glass of something and nobody will check on you more than strictly necessary.
