Murphy's on the Green has occupied 11 South Main Street since 1989 — a corner address one door north of the Hanover Inn, with leaded-glass front windows looking onto South Main and the Dartmouth Green. The dining room runs through two linked spaces: a front bar area with high tops, a long mahogany bar, and a chalkboard beer list; and a more formal back dining room with banquettes, hardwood floors, framed Dartmouth memorabilia (varsity team photos from the 1930s onward, oars from the Dartmouth rowing programme, framed Hanover Gazette front pages), and a generously spaced table count. About a hundred and ten covers across both rooms; the back room takes the larger parties.
The menu is the contemporary Hanover-bistro format — broader than a pub, more relaxed than a hotel dining room. Signatures include the Murphy's burger with sharp Vermont cheddar and bourbon-bacon jam (the most-ordered item in the building); a fish-and-chips with Smuttynose ale batter and house-made tartar; a pan-roasted chicken with Vermont maple and cider glaze; a New England clam chowder that has been on the menu since opening; and a vegetable-and-grain bowl programme that the kitchen has expanded each year. The dessert programme runs a maple-and-walnut bread pudding and a chocolate-mousse cake that the room is genuinely known for.
The beer list is the room's parallel headline — about thirty-five drafts plus a careful bottle programme, biased toward Vermont and New Hampshire producers (Hill Farmstead, Lawson's Finest, Smuttynose, Stoneface, Foundation, Tree House) and rotating with the seasons. The wine list is shorter but useful (about sixty bottles, working California and a small Burgundy section). Service runs at the experienced college-town tempo — fast at the bar, paced in the back room, capable of handling a twelve-top without anybody feeling rushed. For a Dartmouth-team dinner or a Hanover Friday-night meal that needs to be neither a hotel dining room nor a fast casual, Murphy's is the obvious move.
