Fort Smith's Essential Tables

Eleven kitchens carry a serious dinner in Fort Smith, and the best of them sit within a few blocks of Garrison Avenue. This is Arkansas's second city, hard against the Oklahoma line where the Arkansas River bends, and its dining splits cleanly in three. Downtown rooms have been rebuilt inside century-old brick. Chef-driven steakhouses cluster out at Chaffee Crossing. And one casino dining room, five minutes across the state line in Oklahoma, hired a Food Network name. How Fort Smith Eats

Start with what is not here. Arkansas has no Michelin Guide and never has, so a star means nothing in the River Valley and our own scores on food, ambience and value do the work instead. Fine dining tops out at four dollar signs, and even those rooms run warm and unhurried rather than formal. No restaurant in town requires a jacket; smart-casual carries you everywhere from 21 West End to the casino floor.

Dinner is early. Kitchens fill between six and eight, and many close their lines by half past nine, so the long, late European evening is not the local rhythm. Reservations are the exception rather than the rule. Midweek you can walk in almost anywhere, but the two rooms that matter most, 21 West End and StoneHouse Chaffee Crossing, fill on Friday and Saturday and reward a call a few days ahead. Tipping follows the American standard of 18 to 22 percent on the pre-tax total, and no house adds an automatic service charge to a normal table.

Geography shapes the rest. The Oklahoma state line runs right at the edge of town, and the casino gambling sits on the far side of it, so the dinner-and-tables crowd drives west to Pocola for Seven Ponies at Choctaw Casino. On the east side, Chaffee Crossing, the redeveloped former Fort Chaffee army post where Elvis Presley took his Army induction haircut in 1958, has become the fastest-growing dining district in the city. Downtown, Garrison Avenue, one of the widest main streets in the region, anchors the historic core beside the Fort Smith National Historic Site and Judge Isaac Parker's old courtroom. The cooking leans steak, flown-in seafood, Delta tradition, and a surprisingly deep Italian streak.

Best Neighborhoods for Dinner

Downtown & Garrison Avenue. The historic core holds the densest run of good tables. 21 West End anchors it on North 2nd Street, with Prima Italia, Uncork'd and Doe's Eat Place within walking distance, and The Rialto sitting right on Garrison itself.

North Side: A Street and North 10th. A short drive from the centre, this is where the city's most personal rooms live. Rolando's Restaurante fills an 1850s building on North A Street, and AJ's Oyster House runs its oyster bar on North 10th.

Chaffee Crossing & Barling. The east-side redevelopment district is where the chef-driven steakhouses landed. StoneHouse Chaffee Crossing and BluPoint Seafood & Steak bring prime beef and flown-in seafood, while Piatto turns out knife-and-fork Neapolitan pizza nearby.

Across the line: Pocola, Oklahoma. Five minutes west of downtown, the gambling and the biggest dining splurge both sit in Oklahoma. Seven Ponies at Choctaw Casino & Resort is the reason to cross, with Jet Tila's menu drawing Fort Smith diners over the state line.
