Vilanculos Beach Lodge — Mozambican / Seafood, Bazaruto Archipelago

Vilanculos is the jumping-off point for the Bazaruto Archipelago — a small coastal town where the dhow jetties line the beach and the islands are visible on clear days. The Beach Lodge's restaurant is the best dining option in town and the natural place to eat on the night before or after island travel.

The peri-peri prawns here are among Mozambique's finest versions of the national dish — large tiger prawns from the channel, grilled in the Portuguese-Mozambican tradition with peri-peri sauce that applies heat with intent rather than abandon, served with rice and a simple salad.

The 2M (Dois M) — Mozambique's national lager — arrives cold and frequently refilled. Paired with the prawns on the beach terrace as a dhow sails past in the foreground, it constitutes one of the most satisfying eating experiences in southern Africa.

The lodge's beach position means the evening meal happens with the bay visible and the soft sound of water on sand. It is considerably more atmospheric than the price suggests, which is why regulars book the beach-facing tables weeks in advance during peak season.

Best Occasion: Good for Birthdays

A full round of peri-peri prawns, cold 2M in rounds, and the bay view as the sun goes down. Straightforwardly celebratory and unreservedly enjoyable.

Best Occasion: Works for Solo Dining

The beach terrace and bar are exactly right for solo travellers either departing to or arriving from the islands. The staff treat lone diners with genuine warmth and the dhow activity on the bay provides constant visual interest.
