Brunch in Sun Valley is a mountain-town breakfast, not a bottomless buffet. Gretchen's plates eggs benedict in the Lodge, The Kneadery has fried Idaho mornings since 1974, and the Konditorei pours Austrian coffee in the Village. These six rooms across Sun Valley and Ketchum, ranked, are where to start a slow morning before the lifts or the trail.
1.Gretchen's
The resort's all-day room plates eggs benedict, a veggie hash and avocado toast off the Lodge lobby; the dress-up morning pick.
Gretchen's sits off the lobby of the Sun Valley Lodge and is the closest thing the resort has to a proper sit-down brunch. Breakfast runs daily from 7am to 11am, with eggs benedict, a veggie hash, steel-cut oats and avocado toast mostly in the $14 to $22 range.
The room is bright and modern, named for the Olympic skier Gretchen Fraser, and an easy walk from the ice rink and pool. It is the one morning spot here worth a reservation on a busy ski or summer weekend; book it on OpenTable rather than walking up.
2.The Kneadery
The Ketchum breakfast classic, a log-cabin room of scrambles and pancakes running first-come since 1974; come early before the wait.
The Kneadery has cooked a rustic Idaho breakfast from 260 Leadville Avenue North since 1974, the Ketchum morning institution. The kitchen runs scrambles, big pancakes and hashes, with most plates landing around $13 to $18, served daily from 8am into the early afternoon.
The room is all timber and antlers, warm and unhurried, and it takes no reservations for breakfast. Come early, especially on a weekend or a powder day, because the wait builds fast once the town wakes up.
3.Konditorei
An Austrian coffeehouse in the Village pouring espresso, breakfast plates and case pastries from 7am; the pick for strudel and a torte.
The Konditorei is the Austrian cafe at the center of Sun Valley Village, open from 7am to 3pm daily. The morning runs from full breakfast plates and omelets to a pastry case of strudel, torte and croissants, with breakfast dishes mostly $10 to $16 and coffee done properly.
The room nods to Sun Valley's Austrian roots, with a fireplace and a terrace that catches the morning sun. No reservations are needed; walk in, order at the counter or grab a table, and linger over the coffee and a slice from the case.
4.Bigwood Bread Cafe
A working bakery cafe on Northwood Way doing scrambles, breakfast bowls and fresh-baked bread; the casual all-morning Ketchum option.
Bigwood Bread Cafe runs from 271 Northwood Way in Ketchum, a working bakery with a cafe attached, open daily from 8am to 2:30pm. Breakfast covers hearty scrambles, breakfast bowls, fresh bread and pastries, with plates generally $10 to $16 and the loaves baked on site.
The room is relaxed and family-easy, good for a quick table or a grab-and-go before a hike. It is walk-in only; come for the scramble and leave with a loaf for the cabin.
5.Java on Fourth
The Ketchum coffee institution for a Bowl of Soul, espresso and light breakfast on Fourth Street; the quick caffeine-and-pastry stop.
Java on Fourth on Fourth Street West is the Ketchum coffeehouse, known for the Bowl of Soul and a deep espresso menu. It opens at 6am on weekdays and 7am on weekends, with coffee, breakfast burritos, pastries and light morning plates mostly under $14.
The room is small and busy, the local before-the-mountain stop rather than a sit-down brunch. Walk in, order at the counter, and take the cup to a window seat or out to the street.
6.Maude's Coffee and Clothes
A First Avenue coffee bar pouring organic espresso with fresh pastries and grab-and-go plates; the light, quick morning option.
Maude's Coffee and Clothes sits at 311 First Avenue in Ketchum, a coffee bar and shop open daily from 7:30am to 5pm. The counter pours organic espresso alongside fresh-baked pastries and farm-to-table grab-and-go items, a light breakfast mostly under $12.
The room doubles as a small shop, bright and unhurried, good for a quiet cup before the day starts. It is walk-in only; come for the espresso and a pastry rather than a full plated breakfast.
Not for everyone
Closed, or not a morning room
Rico's. The old Ketchum Italian spot on Main Street is closed as of 2026, so do not plan a morning around it. For a sit-down Village breakfast instead, head to Gretchen's or the Konditorei.
The Sun Valley Lodge Dining Room. The grand second-floor room once ran a famous Sunday brunch, but it is closed now. Gretchen's, one floor down off the lobby, is where the Lodge serves its morning food today.
Grumpy's and Lefty's. Both Ketchum favorites open around lunchtime for burgers and beer, not breakfast. Save them for an afternoon off the mountain rather than a morning table.
How to brunch well in Sun Valley
Brunch here splits between two towns a mile apart. Sun Valley Village holds the resort rooms, Gretchen's in the Lodge and the Konditorei, an easy walk from the rink and pool. Ketchum proper has the casual breakfasts: The Kneadery, Bigwood Bread, Java on Fourth and Maude's, all within a few blocks of Main Street.
Almost none of it takes reservations, so the move is to go early. The Kneadery and the coffee rooms build a wait once town wakes, especially on a weekend or a powder day. Gretchen's is the one place worth booking ahead; everywhere else, beat the crowd rather than fight it.
