Best Restaurants for Family-Friendly in New York (2026)

Family-friendly · New York · 6 rooms ranked · Updated June 2026

Carmine's plates chicken parm in platters built to feed three, and a few blocks west the waiters at Ellen's Stardust Diner break into show tunes between the milkshakes. New York feeds families on spectacle and scale, not a chicken-finger menu. These six, ranked, are where to eat with children in the city.

1.Carmine's

Italian · Times Square · Family-style since 1990

Family-style platters built to share and feed children easily; book the Times Square room before a Broadway show.

Carmine's has served family-style southern Italian since 1990, with rooms at 200 West 44th Street in Times Square and 2450 Broadway on the Upper West Side. The chicken parmigiana, the penne alla vodka and the giant meatballs all come on platters built for sharing.

Family-style entrees run roughly $35 to $70 a platter and each feeds two to three, so a table of children lands near $40 a head. It is loud, casual and built for groups, which makes it the pre-theatre family pick.

2.Ellen's Stardust Diner

Diner · Theater District · Singing waiters

Singing waiters and a retro diner menu that turns dinner into a show; come with children for the spectacle.

Ellen's Stardust Diner has run since 1987 at 1650 Broadway in the Theater District, a retro 1950s room where the waitstaff are aspiring Broadway performers who break into show tunes through the meal. The burgers, milkshakes and all-day breakfast carry the menu.

Mains run roughly $18 to $28 with a per-person minimum, so plan near $25 to $35 a head. The live performances are the whole point, and for children the singing is more memorable than the food, which is the right trade here.

3.Serendipity 3

American · Upper East Side · Frrrozen Hot Chocolate

The whimsical Upper East Side room built around its giant Frrrozen Hot Chocolate; come with children for the dessert.

Serendipity 3 has been a New York institution since 1954 at 225 East 60th Street on the Upper East Side, with a second Theater District room that opened in 2024. The trademarked Frrrozen Hot Chocolate and the oversized sundaes are the reason to come.

The Frrrozen Hot Chocolate runs about $16 to $18 and mains land near $20 to $30, so a meal sits near $30 a head. The whimsical decor and the giant desserts make it a magnet for children, who come for the sundae over the entree.

4.Eataly Flatiron

Italian · Flatiron · Open kitchen

Wood-fired pizza, fresh pasta and gelato in an open Italian market; children watch the pizzaioli while parents eat well.

Eataly's Flatiron flagship has run since 2010 at 200 Fifth Avenue, an Italian marketplace with sit-down restaurants including La Pizza & La Pasta. The wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, the fresh seasonal pasta and the gelato carry the family appeal.

Pizza and pasta run roughly $18 to $26, so a meal lands near $30 a head, and the open layout lets children watch the pizzaioli work. It is casual, central and serves parents real Italian cooking alongside a kid-proof pizza.

5.Bubby's

American · Tribeca · All-day comfort

Ron Silver's all-day Tribeca comfort room with a real kids' menu; come for pancakes, pie and an easy table.

Ron Silver opened Bubby's in 1990 at 120 Hudson Street in Tribeca, an all-day American room known for its buttermilk pancakes, from-scratch pies and biscuits. There is a dedicated children's menu and a relaxed neighbourhood mood.

Mains run roughly $18 to $28, so a meal lands near $25 to $35 a head. The all-day breakfast, the comfort cooking and the easy room make it the low-stress Tribeca family standby rather than a special-occasion booking.

6.Jacob's Pickles

Southern · Upper West Side · Big comfort plates

Big Southern comfort plates and a casual Upper West Side room; come with children for the fried chicken and biscuits.

Jacob's Pickles launched in 2011 and now runs from a larger Upper West Side space at 680 Columbus Avenue. The buttermilk fried chicken, the biscuits and the mac and cheese carry a big-portion Southern comfort menu.

Mains run roughly $18 to $28, so a meal lands near $30 a head, with portions built to share across a table. It is a casual, well-known Upper West Side standby that handles a family group without a fuss.

Not for everyone

Closed, unstable, or not for children

Max Brenner. The Union Square chocolate restaurant's operating entity filed for Chapter 11 in February 2026 and the Second Avenue room has already closed, so its status is unstable. Do not plan a family meal around it; Serendipity 3 is the reliable dessert destination.

The Grand Central Junior's. Junior's is still open and family-friendly at its Broadway addresses near 45th and 49th Streets, but the Grand Central location shows as closed, so book the Theater District rooms rather than the dead listing.

Eleven Madison Park, Le Bernardin and Per Se. New York's formal prix-fixe rooms are long, hushed and the opposite of a family meal. They earn their three Michelin stars for an adult evening, but do not bring children to a three-hour tasting menu; the rooms above are built for them instead.

How to eat with children in New York

New York's family rooms cluster around the Theater District for the pre-show crowd, the Upper East and Upper West Sides for the neighbourhood standbys, and Flatiron and Tribeca for the all-day rooms. A Broadway matinee and an early dinner fit together easily around Times Square.

The Theater District rooms fill before curtain, so book Carmine's and Ellen's ahead of a show rather than walking up. For a low-stress weekend meal, the Upper West Side and Tribeca rooms take a family group without a reservation crush.
