Walter and Margarita Manzke pour coffee under the skylights of a Hancock Park landmark, while across town Jessica Koslow chars brioche for the Virgil Village line. Los Angeles treats brunch as a daytime ritual, spread from Venice to Silver Lake. These six, ranked, are where to spend a Saturday morning when the cooking matters as much as the patio.
1.Republique
The Manzkes' kimchi fried rice is the city's defining brunch plate; line up early at the Hancock Park counter.
Walter and Margarita Manzke run Republique at 624 South La Brea Avenue, a 1928 building once owned by Charlie Chaplin, where Margarita took the James Beard Outstanding Pastry Chef award. The kimchi fried rice with short rib and two fried eggs runs about $24, and the brulee-topped adult Pop-Tart anchors the pastry case.
Daytime cafe service runs every morning from eight to two, walk-up only with no reservations. The croque madame and the shakshuka round out a menu best caught before the weekend line stretches down La Brea, so arrive early for a table under the skylights.
2.Sqirl
Jessica Koslow's charred brioche toast and rice bowls built the city's modern brunch; walk up early on Virgil.
Jessica Koslow opened Sqirl at 720 North Virgil Avenue and made her name on thick brioche toast charred over flame and spread with house jam, alongside the sorrel pesto rice bowl. Plates land around $14 to $19, and the counter draws a weekend line the Infatuation rates among the city's best.
As of February 2026 Sqirl added a sit-down dinner with reservations, but the daytime brunch from eight to four stays walk-up only. Come on a weekday morning if you can, or expect a real wait on Saturday for the ricotta toast and a coffee on the patio.
3.Gjelina
A candle-lit Abbot Kinney room turns out wood-fired, produce-driven brunch; book the Venice weekend table ahead.
Gjelina opened at 1429 Abbot Kinney Boulevard in 2008 and remains a fixture of the Venice scene, a favourite of the late Los Angeles Times critic Jonathan Gold. Weekend brunch runs from nine to half two, built around wood-fired toasts, roasted vegetables and thin-crust pizza, with most plates in the $16 to $26 range.
The dining room is dark and candle-lit, the back patio bright and busy, and the kitchen leans hard on local farms. Founding chef Travis Lett has moved on to his own room nearby, but the produce-forward cooking holds, so reserve the weekend table rather than walk up.
4.All Day Baby
Lien Ta's warm Silver Lake room does Southern-leaning comfort brunch; book a weekend table for the biscuit sandwich.
All Day Baby sits at 3200 West Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake, opened by restaurateur Lien Ta and the late chef Jonathan Whitener, and named to the Los Angeles Times 101 list. The fried-chicken biscuit sandwich with strawberry jam and the blueberry hotcakes headline a menu mostly in the $15 to $22 range.
The room is bright and friendly, an easy weekend stop with cocktails and a deep coffee list. The kitchen now runs new vegan plates alongside the comfort classics, so book a weekend table and order the biscuit sandwich and a side of hotcakes to share.
5.Salt's Cure
An open-air Hollywood room built on griddle cakes and ribeye and eggs; arrive early on a weekend morning.
Salt's Cure sits at 1155 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood, an open-air room whose oatmeal griddle cakes with molasses butter became a citywide signature after the move from its original Santa Monica Boulevard space. The griddle cakes run about $16 and the ribeye and eggs about $34, both plated with a Californian, market-driven hand.
The dining room is relaxed and sunlit, with natural wine and proper cocktails on the list. A counter-style spinoff, Breakfast by Salt's Cure, serves a gluten-free version of the cakes nearby, but the Highland Avenue room is the one to come to, so arrive early before the weekend fills.
6.Jon & Vinny's
Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo serve a daily California-Italian breakfast on Fairfax; book ahead for the weekend rush.
Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo run Jon & Vinny's at 412 North Fairfax Avenue, the James Beard award-winning duo behind Animal. Breakfast runs daily from eight to half eleven, with ricotta pancakes, a breakfast pizza and an egg sandwich mostly in the $14 to $20 range.
The room is small, loud and easy with kids, and the weekend tables go fast. Book a Resy slot rather than walk up, order the pancakes and a side of the house bread, and plan around the half-eleven breakfast cutoff before the kitchen turns to pasta.
Not for everyone
Famous, but not actually brunch
Bestia. The Arts District Italian room from Ori Menashe is a dinner-only destination and does not run a weekend brunch service. It is a great evening, but do not arrive on a Saturday morning expecting eggs.
The Apple Pan. The Westside burger counter is a lunch and late-night institution, not a brunch room, and it serves no morning menu. Save it for a hickory burger and a slice of pie, not a Sunday omelette.
Sqirl Away. Jessica Koslow's grab-and-go jam-and-bread storefront is a takeaway window, not a sit-down brunch. For the full toast and rice-bowl menu, queue at the Sqirl counter on Virgil instead.
How to brunch well in Los Angeles
Los Angeles brunch clusters by neighbourhood: Hancock Park and Fairfax for the polished chef rooms, Virgil Village and Silver Lake on the Eastside for the daytime counters, and Venice on the Westside for the patio crowd. The city is spread out, so pick a side of town and stay there rather than driving across it for a single table.
Weekend lines build fast at the walk-up rooms, so arrive before eleven at Republique and Sqirl, both no-reservation in the daytime. For a booked table, Gjelina, All Day Baby and Jon & Vinny's all take weekend reservations, and Jon & Vinny's stops breakfast at half eleven, so plan an early start.
Frequently asked
Where is the best brunch in Los Angeles?
Walter and Margarita Manzke's Republique in Hancock Park is the marquee pick, a daytime cafe built around the kimchi fried rice and a James Beard pastry program. For thick brioche toast and rice bowls, Jessica Koslow's Sqirl in Virgil Village is the destination; for the Venice scene, Gjelina on Abbot Kinney.
Which Los Angeles brunch is best with kids?
Jon & Vinny's on Fairfax is the easiest with children, a loud California-Italian room that serves breakfast daily from eight with pancakes and a kids-friendly menu. Salt's Cure in Hollywood is the other low-stress option, an open-air room with griddle cakes and counter seating that suits a relaxed family morning.
Do you need a reservation for brunch in Los Angeles?
It depends on the room. Gjelina, All Day Baby and Jon & Vinny's take weekend bookings and fill early, so reserve rather than walk up. Republique and Sqirl run walk-up counter service in the daytime with no reservations, so arrive before the line builds, especially on a Saturday.
What is a good upscale brunch in Los Angeles?
Republique in Hancock Park is the polished pick, a grand former Charlie Chaplin building where the Manzkes plate a croque madame and shakshuka under skylights. Gjelina in Venice is the other dressed-up option, a candle-lit room known for wood-fired plates and a weekend brunch that draws a steady Abbot Kinney crowd.
Does Sqirl serve dinner in Los Angeles?
Yes, as of February 2026 Sqirl in Virgil Village added its first dinner service, a sit-down bistro menu with reservations on Resy. The daytime brunch counter, open eight to four, stays walk-up only and remains the reason most people line up for the brioche toast and sorrel pesto rice bowl.
