Central. Booking is also a months-out scramble better suited to a planned group occasion. Eat alone at Maido's counter instead, where a single seat is part of the design.
Astrid y Gastón. The grand Casa Moreyra room is built for couples, groups and business tables, with no real counter and a formality that leaves a solo diner exposed at a table for one. The cooking is excellent and the setting wasted on a party of one. Save it for a dinner with company, and dine solo somewhere with a proper counter.
Kjolle. Pia León's nine-course tasting at S/988 is a destination meal aimed at the table, not a walk-in solo seat, and the room offers little for a single diner to perch at. It is a wonderful occasion dinner and an awkward solo one. Keep it for a guest, and eat alone at a counter that wants you there.
Reservation strategy for solo dining in Lima
The walk-in rooms are a solo diner's best friend in Lima. La Mar and Grimanesa Vargas take no reservations, so you simply turn up; go right at opening, La Mar at lunch and Grimanesa after its late-afternoon start, to beat the queues that punish groups but barely touch a single diner. Chez Wong is the exception: it is tiny, lunch only and reservation-only, so book by phone a few days ahead and go early in service for the freshest sole.
