Best Restaurants to Propose in Honolulu (2026)

Proposal · Honolulu · 6 romantic rooms ranked · Updated June 2026

Surf breaking forty feet from the table while the sun drops behind Diamond Head: that is the view Michel's has used to host Honolulu proposals since 1962, and it explains what this list is built around. A proposal table needs three things a regular dinner does not: a view or a room that makes the moment feel inevitable, a kitchen that can carry a once-in-a-lifetime evening, and a staff that will quietly help you pull it off. Honolulu has no MICHELIN guide, so these rooms are judged on AAA Five Diamond and Forbes ratings, James Beard pedigree and the simple test of whether the setting earns a yes. Two beloved names, Hoku's and Mariposa, closed in 2026, so check the anti-list. These six are where to ask, ranked.

1.La Mer at Halekulani

Neoclassic French · Halekulani, Waikiki · AAA Five Diamond, Forbes Five-Star

Hawaii's grandest oceanfront room, chef Alexandre Trancher's tasting from around $195; the marquee proposal pick. The big yes.

La Mer inside the Halekulani in Waikiki is the most prestigious dinner room in Hawaii, the state's longest-running AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five-Star restaurant, and the classic Honolulu proposal stage. Chef Alexandre Trancher, who trained in starred kitchens in Paris, Greece and Japan, cooks a neoclassic French menu, and a new eight-course Menu Dégustation arrived in April 2026; the tasting runs from around $195 a head, with caviar and wine-pairing add-ons above that. The oceanfront room looks straight out toward Diamond Head, jackets are preferred, and the kitchen and floor staff are practiced at carrying a once-in-a-lifetime evening. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 5:30. This is the room for the proposal that wants no asterisks. Book a window table well ahead and tell them what you are planning.

Reserve a window table on OpenTable or Tock; phone ahead about the proposal.

2.Michel's at the Colony Surf

Classic French · Gold Coast, foot of Diamond Head · romance since 1962

Surf forty feet away and the best oceanfront sunset on Oahu; the most romantic room in town since 1962. Ask here.

Michel's at the Colony Surf, on the Gold Coast at the foot of Diamond Head just past Waikiki, has been the island's signature romance restaurant since 1962, and it remains the proposal room locals name first. The dining room opens directly onto the beach, with the surf breaking around forty feet away and arguably the best oceanfront sunset on Oahu framing the table. The kitchen cooks classic French and modern European with Hawaii ingredients, with the kind of tableside service that suits a slow, momentous evening. It opens nightly from 5. Pricing is upscale a la carte; confirm at booking. Nothing else on the island stacks the deck for a proposal quite like this room at sunset. Reserve an oceanfront table and time the question for the last of the light.

Book an oceanfront table on OpenTable; ask for a sunset seating to time the moment.

3.53 By The Sea

Seafood / contemporary · Kakaako · chef Takayoshi Kawai, Iron Chef

A panoramic room marketed for proposals, Iron Chef Takayoshi Kawai's new tasting, private rooms on request; the planned-moment pick. Stage it.

53 By The Sea in Kakaako is the Honolulu room built for exactly this occasion, with dedicated proposal planning and a sweeping second-floor panorama toward Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. The kitchen is led by Takayoshi Kawai, who won Fuji TV's Iron Chef in 1995 and launched a new grand tasting menu in March 2026, so the cooking has fresh ambition behind the view. Private rooms are available for a proposal that wants to be sealed off from the floor, which sets it apart from the open oceanfront rooms. It is contemporary seafood-led fine dining. Pricing sits at the upper tier; confirm the tasting price when you book. This is the choice when you want the restaurant to help you stage the moment rather than improvise it. Call ahead about a private room and the proposal.

Reserve on OpenTable and ask about a private room for the proposal.

4.Azure

Oceanfront seafood · The Royal Hawaiian, Waikiki · 5-course $145

Beachfront tables at the Pink Palace, a $145 seafood tasting at sunset; the Waikiki-sand proposal pick. Romantic and easy.

Azure sits on the sand at The Royal Hawaiian, the Pink Palace on Waikiki Beach, and it is one of the easiest beachfront proposal rooms to book well. Chef de cuisine Jose Reyes cooks a farm-to-table, oceanfront seafood menu with fish from the daily Honolulu Fish Auction at Pier 38, served as a five-course tasting at $145 a head with an optional $65 wine pairing. The tables sit close enough to the water that a sunset proposal over Waikiki Beach feels staged by the setting itself, in the Spanish-Moorish elegance of the resort. It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 5. This is the romantic, beachfront choice that does not require the full La Mer budget. Book a beachfront table and time the tasting to land at sunset.

Reserve a beachfront table on OpenTable; ask for the earliest sunset seating.

5.Mugen

Contemporary tasting menu · Espacio, Waikiki · tasting $120 to $150

A jewel-box room in an ultra-luxury hotel, tasting from $120 with private service on offer; the discreet proposal pick. Intimate.

Mugen, inside the ultra-luxury Espacio boutique hotel in Waikiki, is the most intimate proposal room on this list, a jewel-box dining room with just a handful of seats and an option for private tasting-menu service away from any other table. The kitchen runs a contemporary, globally influenced tasting menu at $120 to $150 a head, with a $70 wine pairing, in seatings at 5 and 7:30. The room's quiet exclusivity, set in a hotel that runs to five-figure suites, makes it the discreet alternative to the big oceanfront stages, ideal if you want the moment shared with no one but the two of you and the staff. It serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday. This is the choice for a private, high-touch proposal rather than a grand-view one. Ask about in-suite or private dining when you reserve.

Reserve on OpenTable and ask about private tasting service for two.

6.Hy's Steak House

Classic steakhouse · Waikiki · Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence

Old-world library romance and tableside flambé, an award-winning cellar; the classic-elegance proposal pick when the view can wait. Timeless.

Hy's Steak House on Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki is the proposal room for couples who want old-world romance rather than an ocean view, a dark-wood, library-feel dining room that has hosted Honolulu celebrations for decades. The kitchen runs a classic steakhouse with signature tableside service, a Caesar tossed and dishes flambéed at the table, and the wine list holds a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, one of only a handful on Oahu. There is no view here, which is the point: the romance is in the room, the candlelight and the ceremony of the service, and a private-dining option is available for a sealed-off moment. It opens nightly from 5. Choose it when the setting you want is intimate and timeless rather than oceanfront. Book a quiet corner or the private room and let the tableside service set the scene.

Reserve on OpenTable or hyswaikiki.com; request a quiet corner or the private room.

Avoid for a proposal

Closed, or the wrong room for the moment

Hoku's at The Kahala. Hoku's, the oceanfront room at The Kahala Hotel and a longtime proposal favourite, served its final dinner on 20 February 2026 after roughly thirty years and is now closed. The space has been taken over by a returning Alan Wong's, which is too new at this location to vouch for as a proposal room yet. Do not book Hoku's; if you want the Kahala address, watch how Alan Wong's settles in first.

Mariposa. Mariposa, the Neiman Marcus dining room at Ala Moana with its open-air lanai, ended service on 5 May 2026 ahead of the store's closure and is no longer operating. It had been a popular special-occasion room, but it cannot host a proposal now. For an open-air, view-led alternative, Azure at The Royal Hawaiian or 53 By The Sea both deliver the panorama Mariposa was loved for.

Top of Waikiki. The revolving room high above Waikiki has the altitude for a view, but it reads more as a tourist novelty than an intimate proposal stage, and the rotating floor works against the stillness a proposal wants. For a high-up moment it underdelivers next to the oceanfront rooms on this list. Save it for a casual anniversary drink, and propose at Michel's or La Mer instead.

How to plan a Honolulu proposal dinner

Lead with the setting, because in Honolulu the view does much of the work. The oceanfront rooms, La Mer, Michel's, Azure and the panoramic 53 By The Sea, all frame a sunset over the water or Diamond Head, so the single most important booking detail is a window or beachfront table timed to sunset. Call the restaurant directly, not just the booking app, and tell them you are planning a proposal; the rooms on this list are practiced at it and will help with timing, a quiet table, a cake or a photographer if you ask in advance.

Match the room to the kind of moment you want. For grandeur and a no-asterisks evening, La Mer is the marquee; for the most romantic oceanfront sunset, Michel's; for a staged, private moment with the restaurant's help, 53 By The Sea or the jewel-box Mugen; for beachfront ease at a lower spend, Azure at $145; for timeless indoor elegance when the view can wait, Hy's. Book one to two weeks ahead for a weekend, longer around Valentine's Day and the December holidays. Confirm current tasting prices when you reserve, as La Mer's new eight-course menu and the spring tasting menus at 53 By The Sea and Mugen were freshly introduced in 2026.

Frequently asked

Where is the best place to propose in Honolulu?

For the most romantic oceanfront setting, Michel's at the Colony Surf on the Gold Coast is the island's signature proposal room, open onto the beach with the surf around forty feet away and the best sunset on Oahu, hosting proposals since 1962. For grandeur, La Mer at the Halekulani is Hawaii's most prestigious dinner, its longest-running AAA Five Diamond room, with a Diamond Head view. If you want the restaurant to help stage a private moment, 53 By The Sea offers dedicated proposal planning and private rooms. The best choice depends on your priority: a grand view or a private moment.

How much does a proposal dinner cost in Honolulu?

It ranges with the room. Azure at The Royal Hawaiian is a five-course tasting at $145 a head, and Mugen at Espacio runs $120 to $150, both with optional wine pairings around $65 to $70. La Mer at the Halekulani is the top tier, with its new eight-course tasting from around $195 before caviar or pairing add-ons. Michel's and Hy's are upscale a la carte, so the total depends on your order. Confirm current prices when you book, since several of these rooms introduced new menus in 2026. Budget for a special bottle and any add-ons such as a cake.

Do Honolulu restaurants help with proposals?

Yes, the rooms on this list are practiced at it. La Mer, Michel's, Azure and Hy's are longtime special-occasion restaurants whose staff will quietly help with timing, a discreet table and extras such as a cake or sparkling on arrival if you ask ahead. 53 By The Sea goes furthest, with dedicated proposal planning and private rooms available, and Mugen can arrange private tasting service for two. The key is to call the restaurant directly when you book, not just reserve through an app, and tell them what you are planning so they can prepare.

Which Honolulu restaurant has the best ocean view for a proposal?

Michel's at the Colony Surf has the most dramatic oceanfront setting, with the dining room opening onto the beach and the surf breaking close to the table at sunset, framed by Diamond Head. La Mer at the Halekulani looks straight out toward Diamond Head from Waikiki, and Azure puts tables on the sand at The Royal Hawaiian for a beachfront sunset. For a high, panoramic view rather than a beachfront one, 53 By The Sea sweeps across Waikiki Beach to Diamond Head from Kakaako. Book any of them for a window or beachfront table timed to sunset.

Are there Michelin-starred restaurants in Honolulu?

No. Hawaii does not have a MICHELIN guide, so no Honolulu restaurant holds a MICHELIN star. The island's fine dining is recognised instead through AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Travel Guide ratings, Wine Spectator awards and James Beard honours. La Mer at the Halekulani is the state's longest-running AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five-Star restaurant, the closest equivalent to a top-starred room. Hy's Steak House holds a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for its cellar. Judge a proposal room here on those credentials and on the setting rather than on stars.

When should I book a proposal dinner in Honolulu?

Book one to two weeks ahead for a normal weekend at the top rooms, and earlier, three to four weeks or more, around Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve and the December holidays, when the oceanfront tables go first. La Mer is open Tuesday to Saturday, Azure Wednesday to Sunday and Mugen Tuesday to Saturday, so check the days before you plan. Request a window or beachfront table at the time of booking and time the reservation to land at sunset. Calling the restaurant directly, rather than only booking online, gives you the best shot at the right table and any proposal help.
