King's Joy occupies a restored courtyard house beside the Lama Temple in Beixinqiao, Dongcheng, and its Zen aesthetic makes it one of the most serene and genuinely romantic rooms in Beijing. It holds two Michelin stars and a Green Star for its high-end lacto-ovo vegetarian cooking, with refined mushroom and seasonal-vegetable courses across a tasting of ten or more.

3.Xin Rong Ji

Avoid for an anniversary
Quanjude. The 1864 imperial-era Peking duck institution is iconic and worth seeing once, but the big branches are tour-bus loud, banquet-scaled, brightly lit and high-turnover. The history is real and the romance is zero. Go for the landmark duck on another night, not for your anniversary.
Siji Minfu. The duck is excellent and beloved, and the Donghua Gate branch even has Forbidden City views, but it is explicitly a fast-turnover, queue-out-the-door room packed with locals and tourists. Great food, wrong setting for an intimate evening; for a duck anniversary, choose Country Kitchen instead.
Gastro Esthetics DaDong. The upscale DaDong rooms turn out genuinely top-tier modern Peking duck, and the flagship holds a Michelin star, but the brand runs large, buzzy, design-loud halls geared to groups and showmanship. It is energetic rather than intimate, better for a celebratory group dinner than a quiet anniversary for two.

Beijing's best rooms book through channels foreign visitors do not always expect, so plan ahead.
