The Verdict
Sushi Ryugetsu is the Suzhou Industrial Park omakase counter that serious sushi diners in the city recommend without reservation. Opened in 2019 by a Tokyo-trained sushi chef who relocated from Shanghai when the Suzhou market matured enough to support a serious counter, Ryugetsu operates on the classical Edomae model — a single evening omakase, a fixed fifteen-to-twenty piece sequence, and direct sourcing from the Toyosu Market (the successor to Tsukiji) that arrives by air via Shanghai Hongqiao airport.
The counter seats ten. The sequence begins with small cured pieces, moves through the rising richness of the Edomae progression — white fish, silver fish, red tuna, fatty tuna, marinated mackerel — and closes with the traditional finishing sequence of tamago, seasonal soup, and a single final piece that the chef chooses based on that day's market. Each piece is placed on the counter in front of the diner and intended to be eaten within seconds; the sushi rice is seasoned with two different kinds of vinegar depending on the fish it accompanies.
The room itself is small and austere — hinoki wood counter, a single scroll painting on the back wall, the chef visible in complete focus through the entire evening. Conversations happen quietly or not at all. The sake list is deep for a restaurant of this size, with particular strength in Junmai daiginjo from small Niigata and Yamagata producers. The price point is high by Suzhou standards and exactly fair by Tokyo-omakase standards.
Ryugetsu is consistently included in the Michelin Guide China Mainland's Suzhou selection and is widely considered the best non-hotel restaurant in the city. Reservations open monthly and move within hours for weekend evenings.
Why It Works for Solo Dining
Sushi Ryugetsu is one of the best solo-dining rooms in all of Suzhou — the counter format welcomes the single diner, and the chef's focus creates an immersion that is actually improved by dining alone. It is also one of the city's standout first-date restaurants for couples who share sushi-cultural literacy.
