About El Gaucho

El Gaucho sits at 2200 Western Avenue in Seattle's Belltown, in the 1910 Union Stables building on the city's National Register of Historic Places. It anchors part of our Seattle coverage and our steakhouse guide as the city's signature old-school steakhouse.

Paul Mackay revived the El Gaucho name in 1996, drawing on the original Jim Ward steakhouse that ran from 1953 to 1985. The flagship moved into the restored Union Stables in 2021.

The Kitchen

The cooking is classic American steakhouse, built on certified Angus beef aged in-house and finished over a charcoal broiler. The Chateaubriand for two — a twenty-ounce center-cut tenderloin carved tableside with the house Cliff sauce — is the signature ritual.

Tableside Caesar, bananas Foster and flaming dishes complete the old-school theatre. Spend lands at the top of Seattle's steak bracket, with a deep wine list to match.

The Room

The room is dark, plush and theatrical — leather booths, low light and a long bar — set inside the brick-and-timber Union Stables building. Tableside service is part of the show.

It suits a deal dinner or a milestone as much as a special night out. A late happy hour and live piano keep the bar busy.

Best for closing a deal or a milestone

El Gaucho suits a dinner to close a deal, a milestone anniversary or a night to impress clients. For other Seattle steak and power tables, compare Metropolitan Grill, AQUA by El Gaucho and Six Seven.

Not for

Not for a casual quick bite or a tight budget — it is a top-bracket, tableside-service steakhouse built for a long, dressed-up dinner.
