About Suffolk House

Suffolk House is Malaysia's only surviving Georgian mansion, an early-1800s Anglo-Indian garden house at 250 Jalan Air Itam that served for decades as the home of successive British governors. A long, passionate restoration won it the 2008 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for cultural conservation, and the mansion now works as a dining room and event house in George Town, Penang. The kitchen is led by Dutch executive chef Mathijs Nanne, who trained in Sydney before running kitchens in Langkawi and Penang.

The cooking is Western fine dining built on French technique and local Penang produce. For more of the island's tables, compare the French Au Jardin, the Nyonya tasting room Kebaya Dining Room and the contemporary Restaurant Blanc. For the wider category, see our French dining guide or plan a milestone with our anniversary picks.

The Kitchen

Chef Mathijs Nanne pulls French cooking technique toward the island, building dishes around locally sourced Penang produce and the nutmeg the state is known for. Set menus run from RM65 for three courses, offered Monday to Thursday in the early evening, to four-course menus between RM80 and RM150, with a five-wine tasting flight at RM280 net per person for those who want the pairings. The signature finish is his bittersweet chocolate and nutmeg pave, and the kitchen is also known for a playful sorbet of sambal belacan with lime gel, fragrant leaves and a cashew crumble. Afternoon high tea is served daily on the North Terrace at RM90 for two. Prices sit in the mid-to-upper range for George Town: this is special-occasion cooking rather than an everyday dinner.

The Room

The room is the draw as much as the plate. Diners sit inside a restored Georgian mansion of high ceilings, tall shuttered windows and a wide verandah, with the Grand Ballroom used for lunch and dinner and the North Terrace for high tea. It sits on Jalan Air Itam, next to the Malaysian German Society and a short drive from the George Town core, set back in its own grounds. The mansion reads grandly for an anniversary, a proposal or a special dinner, while the daytime high tea and set lunch open it up to a more relaxed visit. Booking ahead is sensible, particularly for dinner and for terrace tables, and the house also hosts weddings and private events.

Best for an Anniversary

The restored mansion, the candlelit ballroom and the chef's nutmeg-laced French menu make Suffolk House a memorable anniversary or proposal dinner, and an elegant first date when you want the setting to do the talking in Penang.

Not for

Not for a quick, casual bite or a tight budget - this is a heritage mansion built for unhurried set-menu dinners and high tea, where the restored setting carries part of the price.
