The Verdict

The Kebaya Dining Room is the signature restaurant of Seven Terraces, Christopher Ong's restoration of seven interconnected 1890s Peranakan shophouses into what is now widely considered the most architecturally significant boutique hotel in George Town. The dining room occupies the ground floor of one of the terraces, opening onto a small internal courtyard lit by antique Straits Chinese lanterns, and surrounded by the Peranakan antiques — black-wood furniture, mother-of-pearl inlay, gilded screens — that Ong has spent three decades collecting.

The menu is Nyonya cuisine — the food of Penang's Peranakan community, descended from 15th-century Chinese traders who married into Malay families — refined for the table without losing the acidity, the sambal heat, or the coconut richness that defines the cuisine's character. The signature dishes include the kapitan chicken, the jiu hu char (shredded jicama with squid), the nasi ulam with the full herb salad treatment, and a Penang-style acar that the kitchen pickles on the premises. The cocktail programme is the strongest in George Town, built around Peranakan ingredients — pandan, gula melaka, lime leaf, bunga telang.

The service is formally Peranakan: the Nyonya staff are trained in the rituals of the cuisine and will explain, without being asked, the dish provenance, the family matriarchs credited, and the cultural meanings attached. A full dinner runs to four or five shared courses, and the pacing is deliberately unhurried — this is not a restaurant that turns tables.

Why It Works for First Date

Kebaya is the Penang first date that explains the city in a single evening. The setting — seven interconnected 19th-century shophouses, the Peranakan antiques, the internal courtyard — is the single most evocative dining interior in Malaysia. The cuisine itself is complex enough to produce the conversational topics a first date requires; the dishes arrive with stories attached; and the pace is slow enough that the evening will not end before the conversation is finished. For visitors new to Nyonya cuisine, a single meal here is a more effective introduction than any guidebook.
