The Ottawa Dining Guide
Ottawa's dining scene operates in the shadow of Toronto and Montreal, which has freed it to become quietly excellent on its own terms. The diplomatic corps and federal civil service support a more serious fine-dining base than the city's metropolitan population (1.5 million) would otherwise sustain, and the Outaouais agricultural region — the rich pocket of farms east and south of the city — gives Ottawa kitchens an ingredient bench that punches above its weight. There is no Michelin Guide here yet, but Atelier's 40-course tasting menu has held the city's most adventurous booking since 2008, and Riviera and Beckta run the Sparks/Centretown corridor with the kind of discipline the capital expects.
The pantry is Ontario-Quebec hybrid: Outaouais lamb and pork, Ontario corn and tomatoes, Quebec foie gras and cheese, Atlantic shellfish through the Montreal-Toronto-Halifax corridor. Ottawa kitchens lean toward the tasting menu (Atelier, Fauna), the Sparks/Centretown brasserie (Riviera, Beckta), and the new-wave Hintonburg neighbourhood projects (Stofa, Town). Cocktails run classical-Canadian with a strong rye and Ontario-craft-spirits bench. Coffee is third-wave; brunch culture in the Glebe and Westboro is genuinely good.
