#2 in Mykonos

Interni
Mykonos

A fairy-lit garden courtyard in the heart of Chora that makes every dinner feel like the most important night of your life.

The Restaurant

If there is one restaurant in Mykonos that transcends the usual debates about food versus setting, it is Interni. The courtyard — designed by the Italian designer Paola Navone for owner Nikos Varveris — is one of the most genuinely beautiful spaces in the Mediterranean. Tropical trees rise through the centre of the space, their canopies lit from below; hundreds of small lights thread through the branches overhead; tables are spaced generously across the stone-paved garden. After dark, when the candles come out and the last of the sunset light fades from the sky above the surrounding whitewashed walls, Interni achieves something that most restaurant designers spend their whole careers reaching for and never quite catching.

On Matoyianni Street — the main pedestrian artery of Chora — Interni occupies a position that should, by rights, make it a tourist trap. It is not. The kitchen operates to a standard that would justify the restaurant's reputation independent of its extraordinary setting. The menu is modern Mediterranean with confident Italian inflections: handmade pasta dishes that hold their own against anything in Rome, grilled fish and meats of exceptional quality, a raw bar worth lingering over, desserts of real craft. The wine list covers Italy and Greece with equal authority.

What Interni does exceptionally well is manage the tension between spectacle and intimacy. The space is large — it can accommodate several hundred covers on a peak summer night — but the table spacing and the organic architecture of the garden mean that even on a full evening, each table feels private. This is an achievement of design rather than accident, and it shows.

Service is warm and professional, accustomed to an international clientele with high expectations. The kitchen is consistent — not a restaurant that has peak-season and off-peak versions of itself. On any given evening in Mykonos, Interni will be one of the island's most sought-after tables, and the difficulty of securing a booking has become part of its mythology.

Best for Proposals

The combination of extraordinary setting, reliable food, and genuine privacy within a large space makes Interni close to the ideal proposal restaurant in Mykonos. The garden's natural acoustics mean that even at full occupancy, conversation doesn't require raising your voice. Corner tables — request these when booking — are partially screened by planting and offer the most seclusion. The sunset timing in Mykonos (the sky above the open courtyard turns extraordinary colours before full dark) creates a natural theatrical moment. The kitchen will accommodate pre-arranged celebrations with notice. This is a setting where a proposal feels organic rather than engineered.

Practical Information

Interni is located on Matoyianni Street in the heart of Chora — the pedestrian shopping street most visitors will encounter regardless of where they're staying. The restaurant is seasonal (late April through October) and bookings in July and August require four to six weeks' advance notice for prime evening tables. Request a garden table rather than an indoor seat. Dress code is elegant resort; this is a restaurant where the effort of dressing well is rewarded by the company around you. Reservations via the restaurant website or by phone; group bookings (above eight) require direct contact with the manager.
