Kastro's
Mykonos

The most romanticised table in the Cyclades since 1976 — candles over the sea, the windmill silhouette at dusk, and Greek seafood that has the rare decency to earn its spectacular setting.

The Restaurant

There are restaurants with views, and then there is Kastro's. Positioned at the very edge of the Little Venice district in Mykonos Town, the restaurant's tables extend over the sea wall itself — there are tables here where you are, quite literally, above the Aegean. Not near it, not overlooking it: over it. On a calm summer evening, the sound of water moving beneath the flagstones is a constant, low accompaniment to the meal. On a slightly less calm evening, the sensation is rather more immediate.

Kastro's has been in its current location since 1976 — a tenure that makes it one of the longest-established dining institutions in the Cyclades. That longevity carries with it a particular quality: the restaurant knows exactly what it is and has no interest in reinventing itself. The menu is Greek, anchored in seafood, and executed with the kind of consistency that comes from decades of practice. Grilled fish, whole and simply dressed with olive oil and lemon, is the centrepiece. The seafood platter, assembled from the morning's market delivery, functions as both a menu and a declaration of intent: this kitchen does not complicate what does not need to be complicated.

The wider menu extends to contemporary Greek preparations — beautifully plated seafood dishes with carefully assembled accompaniments, meat dishes with slow-cooked depth — that demonstrate a kitchen with genuine skill alongside the traditional anchors. Main dishes typically fall between €30 and €60; a full dinner for two with wine reaches €140–€200, making this more accessible than most of Mykonos's comparable-setting restaurants.

The view of the windmills from the seating closest to the water edge is one of the most photographed sights in all of Greece. Arrive at least an hour before sunset to claim the right table. The crowd is a mix of romantic couples, anniversary celebrants, and first-time visitors to the island who have done their homework. See the full Mykonos guide for complementary options. For proposal dining across the Greek islands, Santorini's caldera-view restaurants offer a comparable emotional register at different scale.

Kastro's is the kind of place that made Mykonos's reputation as a destination for people who understand that the most important meal of a trip does not necessarily require a Michelin star — it requires the right table, at the right hour, in the right light. Kastro's has been providing exactly that for fifty years. Compare with Krama for pure culinary ambition, or Interni for garden romance.

Best for Proposal

If there is a single table on Mykonos built for a proposal, it is the outdoor seating at Kastro's facing the windmills at sunset. The moment the sun touches the horizon, the five iconic windmills silhouette against an orange and pink sky while the water below reflects the light back toward you. It is, without qualification, one of the most beautiful natural moments the Mediterranean offers, and Kastro's has been selecting access to it for half a century. Arrive ninety minutes before sunset to ensure the best seating. Call ahead; communicate what you are planning. The restaurant has decades of experience with exactly this situation and manages it with the appropriate discretion and warmth.

Practical Information

Kastro's Restaurant is located in the Little Venice neighbourhood of Mykonos Town, a five-minute walk from the main square. The restaurant is open seasonally from April through October, with dinner service beginning at 6pm. Reservations are strongly recommended for sunset seating — the tables directly above the water are limited and should be requested specifically at the time of booking. Summer reservations should be made at least two weeks in advance. Dress is smart casual; the setting rewards a degree of effort.
