The Verdict
Nancy's Kitchen opened in 1974 on Jonker Street under Nancy Hong, a third-generation Malacca Peranakan who built her menu from her grandmother's hand-written recipe book. The restaurant has moved twice within the same Jonker Street grid (the current Jalan Hang Lekir address opened in 2014) but the menu has remained essentially unchanged across half a century — and the kitchen still runs under Nancy's daughter, who took over the day-to-day in 2018.
The cooking is the cleanest version of Malacca Peranakan home-cuisine available in any restaurant in the country. Ayam pongteh (chicken slow-stewed with fermented soybean and palm sugar) is the kitchen's most-ordered dish; gehu jiu hu (the squid stuffed with chicken and pork mince) is the most-photographed; chap chye (the cabbage stewed with dried bean curd, lily-bud, and wood-ear mushroom) is on every table without exception. The chicken kapitan (a curry-pork-influenced dry curry) shows the Portuguese Eurasian crossover; the gula melaka cendol closes most meals.
Pricing runs USD 12–22 per person — the cheapest serious dining in our Malacca selection. The dining room is small (40 covers across two ground-floor rooms inside a restored shophouse) and the wait-list at peak hours can run 20 minutes; bookings are essential for weekend lunch. The kitchen is BYO-friendly for wine but the house is dry.
