The Verdict

Kaalama is the rooftop restaurant of the Arena Beach Hotel — Maafushi's largest beachfront property, which sits directly on the southern end of Bikini Beach. The dining room runs across two zones: the indoor rooftop with eight covered tables, and the open-air sun-deck terrace with a further 24 covers facing west toward the sunset. The kitchen is led by a Sri Lankan executive chef with a former-resort background.

The cooking is best understood as Maldivian-Asian fusion: a clean version of the island's home dishes (mas huni for breakfast, fihunu mas reef-fish grills for dinner) sits alongside a Thai-influenced curry program, a serious sushi counter (USD 14–18 per roll), and a small Italian section that is the kitchen's weakest pillar. The reef-fish curry with coconut sambol is the most-ordered dish on the menu; the whole grilled grouper (priced by weight, USD 30–45) is the kitchen's strongest expression.

Pricing runs USD 22–40 per person — the upper end of Maafushi's range, but a fraction of any resort-island comparable. The room peaks at 7pm for the sunset, then again at 9pm for dinner. The sunset window is the room's signature: the western terrace looks directly at the Indian Ocean horizon, and the sun-down service includes a complimentary house mocktail.

Why It Works for First Date

First dates work at Kaalama because the room handles the lighting for you — the western terrace catches the sunset window between 6:00 and 6:30pm, the rooftop's covered tables hold the evening's quieter dining, and the kitchen's mid-paced service lets a slow dinner happen without rushing. The price register is honest enough that no one feels overcommitted on a first meeting.
