The Verdict
Mr. Octopus opened on Maafushi's Bikini Beach in 2019 and quickly became the island's default seafood table. The format is plain: a covered dining deck set on the sand, ceiling fans turning overhead, the lagoon a few steps away. You come for fish, and the kitchen keeps it honest.
The Kitchen
The mixed seafood platter is the order — mussels, reef fish, tuna, calamari rings, a whole crab, four tiger prawns and octopus, with garlic bread and mashed potato alongside, around USD 40 and built for two. Beyond it, the grill turns out jumbo prawns, grilled baby octopus, tuna steaks and octopus kotthu, the Maldivian stir-fry of chopped roshi and reef fish. Grilled lobster is priced by weight per 100g. A full meal for two with fresh juice and sides lands near USD 35–45 — fair money for this much seafood.
The Room
There is no room, really — that is the appeal. The dining area is covered and on the sand, fans for air, the beach in front of you, the staff easy and quick. It runs casual and barefoot, best at sunset when the heat drops and the lagoon turns gold. Maafushi is a local island, so service is alcohol-free; bring your own mood.
Best for First Date
A first date works here because nothing about it is stiff. You sit on the sand with a shared platter, the sunset handles the mood, and the bill stays low enough that neither person feels overcommitted. Order the platter, get two forks, and let the evening run long.
Signature Dishes
The mixed seafood platter; grilled baby octopus; octopus kotthu; jumbo prawns from the grill.
Not For
Not for a formal or air-conditioned dinner — this is a barefoot beach grill with sand underfoot and fans instead of walls, and the local-island alcohol rules apply.
