Jampoon at Phulay Bay

Jampoon is Phulay Bay's Mediterranean restaurant — a beachfront room with a wood-fired grill and a pizza oven, sitting directly on the resort's private beach with the Andaman and the limestone islands offshore as the dining-room view. The kitchen is Italian-leaning Mediterranean, with a strong seafood focus and a deliberate simplicity that plays well against the view.

The menu is not complicated. Whole sea bass grilled over fire, Wagyu short rib, spaghetti vongole, risotto al nero with squid, a Margherita out of the wood oven, and a short dessert section (tiramisu, panna cotta, a passionfruit tart). The wine list is more approachable than Sri Trang's — a serviceable Italian-and-French selection with a handful of reasonable New World picks.

The setting is where Jampoon earns its reputation. The beach tables are set on a raised wooden deck three metres from the sand, the torches light up at dusk, and the sunset line over the bay is uninterrupted. For a resort-celebration dinner, the beach-deck tables are the easier emotional hit than the Sri Trang pavilion.

For a birthday, Phulay Bay and Jampoon operate the set-piece correctly. The resort will coordinate cake service, a photographer, and pre-dinner champagne in an adjacent cabana. The menu is approachable enough for any group, and the after-dinner walk from the beach deck up to the Sunset Bar is the natural extension of the evening.
