History Restaurant

History Restaurant sits inside Brunton Boatyard, the CGH Earth heritage hotel built on the site of an old boat-building yard on the Fort Kochi waterfront. The dining room faces the harbour; the menu is organised by the communities that shaped Kochi's palate — Portuguese, Syrian-Christian, Malabar Muslim, Jewish, Dutch, British, Konkani, and local Kerala Hindu — each section presenting a signature dish from that tradition.

The cooking is deliberately historical. The Portuguese section does the vindaloo in its original meaning — pork with wine vinegar and garlic — not the British-curry-house version. The Jewish section features pastel, the Cochini-Jewish fried meat pastry that has almost disappeared from the city. The Dutch beef ball curry and the British mulligatawny both come from documented recipe sources.

The room itself has teak floors, wooden shutters open to the sea wind, and a period sensibility that stops short of being a museum. The bar at the front of the property — Armoury Bar — is worth an aperitif. The hotel runs a morning spice-and-market tour that pairs well with a History dinner the same evening.

For first dates, the room has a slow, conversational energy — it is not a place that rushes the table. The colonial historical menu gives natural conversation anchors. And the Fort Kochi waterfront, ten steps outside the door, is the walk to extend the evening.
