Heights Restaurant (Aghadoe)

The Heights Restaurant occupies the principal dining room of the Aghadoe Heights Hotel — a quietly grand five-star property set on the ridge above Lough Leane, two kilometres north-west of central Killarney. The room is built around a single architectural gesture: a fifteen-metre wall of glass that frames the entire Lakes of Killarney, the MacGillycuddy's Reeks beyond, and Innisfallen Island in the middle distance. There is no other restaurant in Ireland with a view quite like it.

The cooking is modern Irish fine dining executed with proper technical seriousness. Kenmare Bay langoustines with smoked-butter emulsion. Wild Kerry mountain lamb — slow-cooked shoulder, pan-seared loin — with charred allium and lamb-jus reduction. A signature Skeaghanore duck breast with blackcurrant and toasted barley. The desserts lean Irish-classical with a modern hand: brown-bread ice cream, dark-chocolate fondant with sea-salt caramel, an Irish-cheese course that is the most thoughtful in the south-west.

The wine programme is one of the most serious in Munster — deep on Bordeaux and Burgundy, a proper Champagne section, a thoughtful Loire and Rhône list, and an unusually well-considered by-the-glass programme. The sommelier team is reliably excellent.

Service is country-house formal in the best Irish sense — warm, properly trained, never hovering. A four-course dinner with wine lands around 130 EUR per guest. The view from the corner banquette at sunset is, on a clear evening, the closest thing in Ireland to a guaranteed romantic moment.

There are very few rooms anywhere in Ireland that handle a proposal as gracefully as the Heights at Aghadoe. The lake-and-mountain view through the glass wall does most of the work for you, the Champagne service is properly choreographed, and the staff are skilled at the discreet step-back when the moment arrives. Book a corner banquette and request a sunset table — usually around 45 minutes before official sundown.
