Royal Bar & Hotel

Royal Bar & Hotel has been serving Kandy since 1902 and looks almost exactly like it did then — dark-timber bar, slow ceiling fans, framed photographs of tea planters, and two long dining halls that can absorb a party of twelve without rearranging a chair. The menu runs from British grill classics to a respectable Sri Lankan rice-and-curry set, and nearly everything is priced for a two-person starter.

The bar is the star. Gin-and-tonics are poured with a heavy hand; local arrack cocktails are unexpectedly good; the wine list is cheap-and-cheerful. Groups build their own evenings here — share a dozen starters, a few mains, and as many rounds as the table wants.

Book the back dining hall for groups of eight or more. The staff can run a group menu in advance if you give them 24 hours' notice; otherwise the kitchen will happily take a chaotic order at the table and still deliver it hot.
