Kandy — Editorial Overview
Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, sits in the central hills at 500 meters elevation, wrapped around a lake and guarded by the Temple of the Tooth. The dining scene reflects its complicated history — colonial-era hotels still serving afternoon tea, new-wave Sri Lankan fine dining with views back to the surrounding tea plantations, and a thriving mid-range scene of Tamil, Sinhalese, and European rooms along Peradeniya Road.
Dining Neighbourhoods
The most rewarding dining splits between Central Kandy around the lake (heritage hotels, rooftop bars, and classic tearooms), the Hantana Hills to the south (where the best panoramic restaurants look back over the town and the temple), and Peradeniya to the west (the university district with a dense cluster of modern Sri Lankan and international rooms). For tea-estate lunches, the Geragama and Giragama factories along the A1 highway are within day-trip reach.
Dining Culture & Reservations
Kandy dining runs earlier than Colombo. Most kitchens take last orders at 21:30, and the heritage hotels close their main dining rooms by 22:00. Sri Lankan fine dining is usually served as a rice-and-curry tasting — one large bowl of rice, seven to ten curry bowls, and an expectation that you try them all. Vegetarian and vegan menus are deeply developed and should be asked about even where not advertised. Service includes a 10 percent charge on most printed bills; additional tipping is appreciated but optional.
Tips From the Editors
Book the view. The best Kandy restaurants are the ones with lake or hill panoramas, and those window tables book days in advance. For the temple pilgrimage crowd (evening pujas are a major draw), avoid reserving between 18:00 and 19:30 — the town's traffic is gridlocked during those windows. Dress is smart-casual in the heritage rooms; shorts and sleeveless tops are generally acceptable in casual cafes but not in the hill-country fine-dining restaurants.
