About Claude's Le Café de Ville

Claude's Le Café de Ville has occupied the Oboza Heritage House on Rizal Street for over two decades, serving classical French cuisine under chef-owner Claude Le Neindre. The restaurant is universally regarded as Davao's most romantic room and the benchmark against which every other fine-dining opening in the city is measured.

The Oboza House itself is a 1920s timber-and-stone villa — one of only a handful of Davao's pre-war grand houses to survive the 1940s occupation — and the restaurant occupies three connected rooms on the ground floor. Tables are dressed in white linen, the lighting is low and candle-assisted, and the piano in the main room is played live on weekends. The cooking is uncompromisingly French: escargots bourguignons, duck confit with cherry reduction, tournedos Rossini, crêpes Suzette flambéed tableside.

Chef Claude arrived in Davao in the late 1990s and has cooked here continuously since. His kitchen brigade is small and hand-trained. The wine list — traditionally narrow in Mindanao — has deepened considerably and now carries a legitimate Rhône and Burgundy selection along with Coonawarra and Hunter Valley reds that pair with the house menu.

Value for a French restaurant of this quality is strong — a three-course dinner with two glasses of wine lands around ₱3,000 per person, substantially less than equivalent rooms in Manila. Reservations are essential Friday and Saturday evenings; the restaurant is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Why It's Perfect for First Date

Claude's is where Davao proposes, closes first-date deals, and marks anniversaries. The low light, the piano, the unhurried pace of the three-course menu, the French-trained service — every element of the room is built for the intimate evening. The rear dining room is the most private; request it when booking a proposal or first-date sitting.
