Benjarong at Dusit Thani

Benjarong is the Royal Thai restaurant brand of the Dusit Thani hotel group. The Davao branch — inside Dusit Thani Residence Davao in Lanang — is one of only a handful of Benjarong outposts worldwide and the single most reliable Thai kitchen in Mindanao. The cooking is overseen by a Bangkok-trained chef, and the menu is substantially identical to the flagship Benjarong in Bangkok: classical royal Thai, with the complexity intact.

The restaurant occupies a high-ceilinged room on the hotel's mezzanine floor, with silk-paneled walls, traditional teak accents, and lighting that is bright enough for business and low enough for romance. Tables seat four to eight; a private dining room at the rear accommodates twelve. The menu runs to about forty mains: tom yum goong made with river prawns, massaman nuea with local Australian beef, pla rad prik with locally-caught sea bass, gaeng kiew wan with Mindanao chicken and Thai basil flown in weekly.

The signature dish is the Royal Thai Curry Trilogy — a flight of three curries (green, red, massaman) served with jasmine rice and the full condiment tray. Desserts are strong and under-ordered: the khao niaow ma muang (mango sticky rice) with coconut ice cream is the best in Mindanao.

Hotel-standard service, a moderate wine list anchored in Riesling and Gewürztraminer that pair well with Thai heat, and valet parking at the Dusit front entrance. Reservations are straightforward; groups of eight or more should book the private dining room.

For the business dinner that needs hotel-level predictability and a wine list that can keep pace, Benjarong is the Lanang answer. The private dining room — sound-insulated, with its own server — is the preferred room for a negotiation over a long menu. For first-date energy, the mezzanine corner tables are the romantic pick.
