About Apricot Flower Restaurant
The Apricot Flower Restaurant (杏花楼) operates from a restored Bai-traditional courtyard building on Yu'er Road in Dali Ancient Town. The kitchen serves a mixed Bai-and-Sichuan menu — Yunnan's location at the boundary between Bai-cultural-region and Sichuan Province means most local kitchens cook a hybrid menu, and Apricot Flower is the most-recommended single example for travellers who want Bai signatures alongside familiar Sichuan dishes.
The menu is broad. Bai signatures include sour fish soup, Erhai-lake-fish-with-pickled-vegetables, three-course tea, and rushan-cheese preparations. Sichuan classics include mapo tofu, kung-pao chicken, twice-cooked pork, and dan dan noodles. The hybrid dishes (Bai-style Sichuan-spicy fish, Yunnan-ham fried rice with Sichuan peppercorn) are where the kitchen's identity lives. A meal of four dishes, rice, and beer for four diners runs ¥240-360.
The room is the central architectural set-piece — a restored Bai-traditional siheyuan (courtyard) with three connecting wooden pavilions surrounding a small inner garden. The main dining hall seats sixty; six private rooms in the side pavilions seat four to ten each; a small terrace next to the inner garden's mature apricot tree (which gives the restaurant its name) is used for outdoor dinners in summer. The architectural setting alone justifies the visit.
Reservations are useful for the private rooms (one day ahead is enough); walk-ins for the main hall always work outside Chinese-tourist-peak weeks. English menus are present, the staff speak basic functional English, and the picture-led format makes ordering trivial. Cards are accepted; the kitchen runs until 10pm.
Best Occasion Fit
Team dinners with visiting colleagues — the private-room format absorbs four to ten and the mixed Bai-Sichuan menu accommodates every dietary preference. As a first date the courtyard-and-apricot-tree setting is one of Dali's most-photographed romantic dinner backdrops. Birthdays absorb easily; the staff will arrange a small cake with notice.
