About Khao Soi Vijittra

Khao Soi Vijittra (ข้าวซอยวิจิตรา) is a small family-run khao-soi specialist in the Baan Du subdistrict, twenty minutes by tuk-tuk or taxi from central Chiang Rai. The restaurant has been making khao soi. The northern Thai curried-noodle soup that is Lanna's most-recognisable single dish. For forty-plus years using a single family recipe, and is the city's most-cited reference khao soi address by both Thai food press and English-language travel writers.

The signature is the Standard Khao Soi at ฿70. A single bowl of the dish, made with a coconut-curry broth (red-curry paste, coconut milk, turmeric, dry chili, palm sugar, fish sauce), served over thin egg noodles with three small chunks of slow-cooked chicken-or-beef on top, garnished with crispy fried noodles, sliced shallot, pickled mustard greens, and a wedge of lime. Diners squeeze the lime, mix the toppings into the soup, and eat with a soup spoon. The premium portion with extra chicken-on-the-bone is ฿90.

Beyond khao soi the kitchen runs a small northern-Thai menu. Sticky rice with seasonal dipping sauces, a small larb portion, and a few dessert options (sticky-rice mango, banana-and-coconut milk). The restaurant is open 9am-3pm only. This is genuinely a breakfast and lunch operation. Walk-ins outside the 12-1:30 lunch peak work; the queue at peak runs fifteen minutes. Cash only; English picture menus are present.

What makes Khao Soi Vijittra worth the trip out of central Chiang Rai is the broth. Properly emulsified coconut-curry, properly spiced (more aromatic than spicy, balancing curry-paste against fresh palm sugar), and made in small batches throughout service rather than mass-prepared at dawn. The contrast between this khao soi and the central-Thai-tourist versions (and even most Chiang Mai khao soi) is genuinely visible in the depth of the curry flavour.

Solo dining. Counter seat, twenty-minute meal, ฿70 bill, the dish at its source. For team dinners as the lunch leg of a longer Wat-Rong-Khun-and-Doi-Tung day-tour, the format works well.
