Baan Chiwit Mai (บ้านชีวิตใหม่. 'New Life House') is a modern-Thai fine-dining restaurant on the Mae Kok river-side, ten minutes by taxi north of central Chiang Rai. The kitchen runs as a refined version of northern-Thai cuisine. Lanna-tradition dishes interpreted with Modern Thai presentation, hill-tribe-and-foraged ingredient sourcing, and Western-fine-dining plating standards. The restaurant has built its reputation since opening in 2018 as the city's clearest answer for higher-end dinner.
The kitchen is built around a six-course modern-Lanna tasting menu: an amuse of sai oua chili-sausage with house mustard; a soup course of bamboo-shoot-and-foraged-mushroom; a sashimi-style northern-Thai cured fish with green-mango ceviche; a grilled-pork-loin centre with peanut-and-tamarind reduction; a rice course of jasmine-and-sticky rice with hill-tribe pumpkin curry; and a dessert of sticky-rice mango with coconut sorbet. The tasting runs ฿1,800-2,400 per person.
The room is built around the river. A single open-walled dining hall with bay windows facing the Mae Kok, a small outdoor terrace for evening dinners in dry season, and four private booths for groups up to four. The Lanna-style traditional architecture (teak beams, peaked roofs, woven-bamboo wall panels) gives the room a strong sense of place. The garden setting and the river-side location make for one of northern Thailand's most romantic dinner rooms.
Reservations matter. The river-side window seats book two weeks ahead for Saturday evenings. The restaurant accepts cards and English-speaking staff are present at the front-of-house. The wine list is short (sixteen bottles) but the cocktail program leans on regional Thai spirits (Mae Kong rum, lao khao rice spirit) and is unusually strong for Chiang Rai.
