West Lake Restaurant — Xihu Lou — is one of the most famous quality restaurants in Changsha, with a reputation that extends across Hunan Province and among Chinese food travellers who treat the city as a culinary destination. The restaurant operates as a banquet-format venue: multiple floors, private dining rooms for groups, and a menu that spans the full breadth of Xiang cuisine's formal register.

The kitchen's reference points are the classic preparations: Steamed Fish Head with Chopped Chilli (Duo Jiao Yu Tou), a Hunan icon where a whole silver carp head is steamed under a blanket of fermented red chillies and finished with hot oil; Braised Pork Belly in the Mao-style (Hong Shao Rou) with the fat rendered to a silk-smooth texture; and the cold-platter starters that open a proper Hunan banquet — spicy beef tendon, marinated tofu skin, smoked pork.

Private rooms accommodate groups of eight to twenty. The service in private dining is genuinely attentive — a team assigned to the room, dishes brought to order rather than rushed. The wine list is adequate; the Shaoyang baijiu selection is excellent.
