About Midsummer House

Daniel Clifford bought Midsummer House in 1998 and spent four years turning a Victorian villa on the bank of the River Cam into a one-star kitchen, winning that first Michelin star in 2002 and a second in 2005. Two decades on it holds both stars in the 2026 Guide, one of only a handful of restaurants outside London to do so. The room looks onto Midsummer Common; the cooking looks resolutely forward. See where it sits among the best restaurants in Cambridge.

The Kitchen

Clifford cooks a single tasting format, currently the eight-course Solstice menu at £280, with shorter Corpus and Trinity menus earlier in the week. The style is precise modern British built on French technique, the produce changing with what Cambridgeshire growers send each morning.

The one dish that has never left the menu is the signature scallop, truffle and apple starter: hand-dived scallop, shaved Périgord truffle and sharp apple, the plate that has anchored the menu since the second star. Around it the kitchen rotates duck cooked on the bone, aged turbot and a run of pre-desserts before the finish. Pastry is a genuine strength, not an afterthought. Pairings run to serious Burgundy and Loire from a cellar that rewards the wine flight. It earns the tasting-menu billing it claims.

The Room

The dining room seats around forty across two floors of the 1886 villa, with a conservatory looking onto the Common and a chef's table beside the kitchen pass. Tables are generously spaced and the sound level stays conversation-easy even at a full Saturday service. Lighting is low and warm, the service formal without stiffness, a brigade of suited servers and a sommelier who actually pours. Dress is smart, jackets common but not required. Book the chef's table for the theatre, the conservatory for the light.

Best for an Anniversary

Reserve this room for a milestone anniversary because it does the three things a milestone needs: a long, paced menu that fills an evening, a room quiet enough to talk across, and a sense of occasion the bill is meant to match. The four-hour Solstice menu is a marker, not a quick dinner, so it suits the night you have been saving a date for. Couples celebrating decades book the conservatory at sunset; see the rest of our picks for an anniversary dinner.

Not for

Not for a casual midweek bite or anyone on a schedule: there is no a la carte, and the Solstice menu runs close to four hours.

Frequently Asked

Is Midsummer House worth it?

Yes, if you treat it as a destination dinner rather than a casual meal. Daniel Clifford has held two Michelin stars here since 2005, and the cooking justifies the £280 Solstice menu through technique, pacing and a pastry section most kitchens cannot match. Go for a milestone, not a Tuesday.

How hard is it to book Midsummer House?

Book three to six weeks ahead for a weekend table, and sooner around Christmas and Valentine's. Reservations open online and by phone, and weekday lunches on the shorter menus are the easiest seats to land. The chef's table beside the pass goes first, so request it early if you want it.

What is the dress code at Midsummer House?

Smart dress is expected and most men wear a jacket, though it is not strictly required. There are no trainers or sportswear; think of the level you would wear to a formal dinner. The room is elegant but the staff are warm, so you will not feel policed for an open collar.

What does dinner at Midsummer House cost?

The signature Solstice tasting menu is £280 per person, with shorter Corpus and Trinity menus earlier in the week at lower prices. Wine pairings add a significant amount and the cellar runs deep into Burgundy. Budget for a serious evening rather than a quick dinner before you book.

Is Midsummer House good for an anniversary?

Yes, it is one of the strongest anniversary tables in the East of England. The long Solstice menu fills the evening, the conservatory looks onto Midsummer Common, and the room stays quiet enough for conversation. Compare it with our other anniversary picks before booking.
