About Kingston Arms

The Kingston Arms is a cosy side-street pub just off Mill Road, restored in February 2023 under new licensees with the stated aim of being "a true local town pub in the city." It carries a CAMRA Asset of Community Value listing and a shelf of Observer Food Monthly awards — Best Cheap Eats, Best Sunday Lunch and Best Place to Drink.

It is the antithesis of Cambridge's tasting-menu rooms, and a useful counterweight on a city solo-dining night when you want a pint and a pie rather than a production.

The Kitchen

There is no head chef in the fine-dining sense — this is a pub, and proud of it. The kitchen runs to luxury savoury snacks, scotch eggs and the renowned large and small pork pies, supplemented by pizza from local partner Scott's All Day. The draw is the cellar: up to seven cask beers, always including a dark one, with Wye Valley Stout and Draught Bass among the regulars.

For an actual sit-down dinner in the same city, The Pint Shop and Midsummer House sit at opposite ends of the scale.

The Room

Old Cambridge Beer Festival posters, breweriana and a ceiling slowly disappearing under pump clips set the tone inside; behind, a walled garden with canopies and heaters stays in use all year. It is dog- and child-friendly, with Sky TV and the unhurried rhythm of a proper local.

The mood is conversation, not occasion. For a coffee-and-bun stop nearby, Fitzbillies is the Cambridge institution.

Best for Solo Dining

The Kingston Arms is at its best for solo dining — a pint, a pork pie and a corner of the snug or garden — and for a low-key team lunch where nobody wants a fuss. An easy first pint on a casual date works too, provided neither of you was expecting a tablecloth.

Not for

Not for a special-occasion dinner, a dress-up date or a full multi-course meal — the kitchen is pub snacks and pies, with the beer as the headline.
