About Kappo Tomonaga
Kappo Tomonaga is an eight-seat counter kaiseki room in the Kannawa onsen district, four minutes' walk from the Jigoku-Mushi Kobo. The chef trained at a one-Michelin-star Osaka counter for nine years before relocating to Beppu in 2018 to open his own kitchen, and the menu is built around same-day Bungo Bay fish (red sea bream, Bungo-mackerel, yellowtail, octopus) with seasonal mountain ingredients from the Yufu valleys.
The menu structure is formal kaiseki: a hassun, a soup, a sashimi course, a grilled course, a steamed course, a rice course, and a small sweet, with seasonal modulations across the eight courses. Pricing runs ¥9,800 at lunch (a four-course shorter menu) and ¥14,000-18,000 at dinner. The sake list is a single A5 card. Sixteen bottles, every one an Oita brewery. And a four-pour pairing is ¥3,500.
Where Bungo Yamaichi is a special-occasion room and Toyotsune is a casual lunch counter, Kappo Tomonaga is the working dining room. The kind of place a Beppu-resident takes a Tokyo client when the dinner needs to be properly seasonal but not formal. The chef speaks limited but functional English; the menu is on a Japanese-only card with picture inserts; reservations are by phone or hotel concierge.
The room is modest. Eight counter seats, two private tatami booths in the back for groups up to four, a single ikebana, a small wood-fired stove that the chef uses for charcoal courses. The post-dinner walk back through the Kannawa onsen district at 9pm. Steam rising from the bath-houses, lit lanterns above each bath entrance. Is one of the genuine sensory memories of an Oita food trip.
Best Occasion Fit
For a birthday celebration with a small group of four, the back tatami room is private and the kitchen will arrange a small additional dessert with notice. For first dates with food-curious partners, the counter format and the seasonal-ingredient narration give the meal an architecture. For closing-the-deal dinners with smaller two-person groups, the counter intimacy and the moderate price point work well.
