The Room
Jose Andres opened Jaleo on 7th Street NW in 1993 — the Spanish-American chef's first restaurant and the dining room that effectively introduced America to serious Spanish tapas. Thirty-two years later Jaleo is the working argument for what a casual-fine-dining Spanish institution can be at scale.
The James Beard Foundation has shortlisted Jaleo for Outstanding Restaurant multiple years. The dining room is intentionally vibrant: hand-painted Spanish folk art, a long bar, an open kitchen at the back.
The Food
The tapas programme runs the canonical Spanish small plates — patatas bravas, gambas al ajillo, jamón ibérico, the seasonal-rotating tapas. The paella programme runs five rotating preparations. The Spanish-fine-dining secondi handle the menu's wider draws.
Sherry programme is one of America's most-influential. Wine list is heavily Spanish. Cocktails are classic-Spanish. Service is informed and warm.
